Buddhism and the acpoalypse, interesting ? on my final today.

There was an interesting question on my sociology of religion final today. First off we were presented with a NY times article saying that there is an asteroid something like 14 miles in diameter that has a good chance of hitting earth in the next 100,000 years. There are something like 3,000 more knownflying rocks that could potentially strike earth as well, and the unknows can come at anytime. The question was that if we were notified that an asteroid were going to strike the earth and destroy it. How would (insert religion of your choice) react.
I chose buddhism because i had done lots of research for another project for this class and as i was writing the essay it dawned on me. If the earth were to be exterminated what would happen to all the buddhists who were not yet "candidates" for nirvana. They would have no earth to be reborn into to continue their quest for enlightenment. I would imagine some monks would simply escape samsara but the vast majority of practicing buddhists would be left out in the cold.
These are just my thoughts, i dont know an incredible amount about this but it did spark my interest enough to seek out some other opinions.

According to Buddhist thought, life and kamma (karma) is not limited to Earth. The cycle of samsara stretches out to the very boundaries of the Universe.

Well, can a person be born in the 1920s? Right now? Are people being born in the 1920s? If it is possible to be born into the 1920s, which is, why is not possible that rebirth has nothing to do with time (which is a human fiction) ? For instance, let us say you have great karma, you are born on a planet that is about to have a massive spiritual awakening.
Bad karma = you are born as a caveman and have to reinvent the wheel. (or maybe that is WONDERFUL karma eh?)

1. The question seems to assume that earth is the only inhabited planet in existence.
2. (Zen) is all about living in the moment, why would they even care?
and what is an "acpoalypse"???;)

Earth already got hit by a giant asteroid once and that didn't stop the wheel of life rotating. Most people would scream and beg for forgiveness from God, while Buddhists would probably sit meditating. Good deal.

I would very much like to see the evidence that someone could be born in the 1920s, today.

Do what u can to prevent the asteroid from impacting the earth. Religion can only offer solace.

I have never heard of samsara transcending time, but i am open to the idea. But the question was geared more towards what would happen to those who cannot complete their quest for enlightenment due to the lack of a planet to inhabit. Afterall, isn't earth and our existance here simple a holding tank where peole can prove themselves worthy of entering the realm of ultimate reality?

Buddhists believe that there are other realms above and below the physical plane. So people can ascend or descend to those realms before becoming enlightened.
