Can I use pet rabbit food.....
    #6869166 - 05/03/07 07:50 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

.....as a substrate? It contains wheat middlings, dehydrated alfalfa meal, dehulled soybean meal, soybean hulls, ground corn, cane molasses, oat groats, soybean iol, and a crap load of presevatives! Can this be used? Im trying it now but the shrooms Im using I found outside in a cow pasture and they were growing in straw mixed with cow crap. Ill tell you the news if anything good happens.

Im no expert but am thinking the molasses will promote mold/yeast growth. I have a pet rabbit, haven't tried using the food as substrate. I have successfully grown outdoors on brf/rabbit droppings though.

If you hydrate rabbit food pellets.
It will turn to paste.

I would NOT use it.

Well Im trying it right now using the rabbit food! Im used a mushie that I found in a cow pasture. It looks like a white umbrella but it has a black spore print. **Im not gonna be eating these!** I picked this mushroom as an experiment to gain experience growing shrooms!

I place the food in a glass jar and added hot water to it. Then I went through the rest of the sterilization process. I then place it "above" my refrigerator, because the heat was perfect, in a cabinet to incubate for the give time period. Its only day three and im seeing good growth. It could be mold but I dont think so. Why? I have some rabbit food outside on the front porch for over a month and there isnt any mold growing on it yet! (Reason, I rescued a wild rabbit from the cat!)

Like I said this is only an experiment! If I get good results then Ill try using the rabbit food to grow edible mushrooms, so I dont break any stupid laws or end up in jail!

follow the cardboard tek its on google. i just seperate regular corrugated cardboard (the flat from the jaggy) and then from there the jaggy fuzzy piece in the middle i take scissors and scrape all the fuzz off. cut it into small pieces, then put that into microwave, lay (dont seal) plastic container lid on top and microwave for like 3 minutes on high and then open microwave seal container and then inoculate/drop in wild mushroom. worked for me but took like a month to start, but i also used peroxide.

this was all before i followed any real sterile guide and i was just interested in growing mushrooms without a PC.

Well Im seeing good growth. Could be spore growth. What do you guys think?
Im seeing a white fuzzy, cotton like growth on top of the rabbit food and it seems to going down the top side of the jar. When I made the spore print it was really dark in color! Thick and loaded with lots of spores. Since I poured the spores from the top would this account for the growth from the top then working its way down to the bottom of the jar? If so does the spore growth get really concentrated when it grows, turning into a white cotton look?

Considering the preservatives in that stuff, I'd be surprised if there's not an antifungal that's going to inhibit your growth.

Anyway, I don't see how you could be seeing good growth in two days from spores. They probably haven't even germinated yet, much less spread out. It probably is some expansion of the substrate from the moisture of the syringe, or something.
