Learning C++?

I would post this in the Computers/Science forum, but meh, that forum is fairly dead
So I've been speaking with a few researchers about an internship with them next fall. I'd be doing neuroscience research. Thing is, most researchers are looking for someone who knows programming languages. I'd like to Learn C or C++ over the summer. Who here knows it? How long did it take you?
Can you think of any other languages that might come in handy in a research environment?

C was my first, C++ after that. Took me about 3 months to learn the language so I could solve some programming problems. Python and Ruby are very useful but I'm too lazy to master them. Get a nice C book and some nice programming problems. After C/C++ you'll get other languages in couple of weeks.

If you know another language already, it helps cause the logic part. I learned the basics and some intermediate programming long time ago, if it helps there are tons of guides and resources online, but then you know that already.

Fortran. I am going to be spending the summer learning that for the same reasons as you.

I know C++ pretty well and would be happy to answer any questions you send in PMs
Do you know any programming languages now?
Why C/C++? Did they say they want someone who can program, or someone who can program in C/C++? Find out if other languages might be a better choice... I prefer C# myself though I'm a ninja with C/C++. Its just easier with C#.

Well, a friend of mine is in a different lab, but the guy he is working under wants him to learn C/C++.
I'll email a few researchers and ask them what languages would be the best to learn. They said "programming skills are a plus." I don't know if they want me to write programs or just add code to existing programs.
Most neuroscience labs that ask for programming skills are pulling a shitload of data from electrodes implanted in neural tissue. They then cluster data into similar patterns (and whatever else they do with massive amounts of data) via some outdated program that needs improvements.

C++ is cake if you already know something about programming. get yourself a nice book and go through some free courses online and you're set.

My uncle is some sort of high-up programmer for the airforce, and back a couple of years ago when I got a bit interested in programming he told me to forget all about C++ and learn Java first.
According to him, there is an extreme shortage of Java programmers, and that he has been having to hire people who are still in college as programmers, and that if you are trained in Java that you will almost always be guaranteed a decent job.
He also told me (because my main interest was in C++) that once I learned Java, I would be able to quickly and easily learn C++ and most other languages. But he made a very firm point that Java would be the best way to go.

Yeah I was 16 back when I was getting interested in programming, and picked up the basics of Java and C++ pretty easily, but then got bored and never made any progress after that

yeah, me too. a few years ago i got into programming and i was good. after a while it got old and i haven't written a single line of code in like two years. the good thing is that it never really goes away, you just have to sink your nose in code again and it will come back.

Yeah little things stick with me that I learned back then, but if I REALLY want to do something I have to go back to my books and do some brush up reading beforehand. Not that I ever got really in depth with it, but it was relatively indepth for a 16 year old...

Nope, I won't lie to employers... That'll screw you over. I told them I didn't know it, but would learn over the summer.
I was caught off guard in an interview today though. The guy said he saw on my resume that I had moderate spanish skills and asked what that was about. So I told him that I had taken spanish for roughly 7 years and can understand it well but conjugation was a problem.
So tells me to hold on a second. He walks out of the room and comes back in with this Mexican guy. Says "<Gumby> this is (something spanish) from Mexico City. He's a world renowned neurophysiology researcher from Mexico City. The thing is, he's great with neuroscience, but not so great with English. Talk spanish to him."
Having to use my spanish in a neuroscience internship was the last thing I expected. I haven't had a spanish class in over a year. You could say I was a bit rusty. So, I did my best and it seemed satisfactory.
We'll see if I get the job.

I've been doing beginner tutorials of C++ and even those confuse the shit out of me
How do you apply these skills???

Practice. Come up with ideas and write software to satisfy your needs.

How do you write software, are there like software writing programs?

Exactly what tutorials have you been doing? If you have written code and compiled it you have written "software".

What does it mean to compile it?
Sorry last question.
