Cool mist and ultrasonic humidifiers are not the same thing.

You can put a towel or paper towels in the bottom. Really you wont have to worry about a lot of excess water. There wont be much. Your cakes should be up off the bottom too BTW.

I set my cakes on a tiny wire mesh shelf that I made.

There is a difference b/w a cool mist and an ultrasonic humidifier........ the ultrasonic gives off alot more humidity in a shorter amount of time, so there is less air exchange than with a cool mist humidifier..... I don't know anything about draining, but I do remember reading something about having to use 3 three liter bottles turned upside down to get rid of the excess water. Look at this page under the humidity section. It seems like you wouldn't have to worry about excess air moisture w/ a cool mist, though.

With a cool mist you will not have to have a drain.

Here is my simple setup using rubbermaid container and cool mist. Way easier to cut rubbermaid than a terrarium.

Thats basically my setup except I have 4 garden hoses coming out of mine with 4 separate terrariums. I'm sure I could run 7 or 8 just from the one humidifier with no drop in humidity. And I dont need a light cause mine are in a room with a window. Cheapest and easiest setup you can have IMO. Especially for the amount of terrarium space I have.

I hear ya Bassplayer74. When I clean out my rubbermaid it takes about 40 min to 1 hour for the humidity to build back up, but I think I will eventually add another rubbermaid and hose to the setup.

What if any are the benefits of using a humidifier as shown above, as opposed to just having a few inches of wet perlite/vermiculite in the bottom of a rubbermade tub/aquarium?

A humdifier only costs around 25 bucks...Perlite will cost much more than that over time. Plus perlite is messy and generally a pain to deal with. Plus, with perlite, you still have to worry about fresh air exchanges.

A cool mist will keep humidity perfect with no mess and it will also give your terrarium the fresh air it needs. Its almost completely automated except you must fill it with water every 3 or 4 days. Big whoop.

Thanks for the information! I got a question though... In that setup, what keeps water from falling from the lid onto the casing/cakes?
.....................................................................................
Notlhing at all. I find that very little humidity condenses on the lid. Most of it is on the sides, but if you run it too long it does wet the cakes. You have to put it on an appliance timer and work out a schedule that gets the humidity up without soaking the cakes. You cannot see the timer in my picture, but it is there. I have mine on for 40 min every 12 hours.

So I would never have to fan again with one of those?

Right...just make sure there is a small hole in the bottom so co2 can escape.
