I have 1 cable modem and want to run 2 computers. Will a router do this for me? What do I need to do? I don't want to ask the cable company, b/c I don't want their bs.
Thanks.

A router should do that for you, yes... Basically, you plug it in to the modem, and then plug the computers into the router. Like magic, both will get on the internet!
If not, then you have to fuck with the settings... You should log in to the router administration (RTFM) and change the default password and setup security, if it's wireless.
Reading the title of the thread, I thought you were going to be looking for drugs!

If your running XP you dont need to buy a router, just set up ICS(Internet Connection Sharing).

With ICS, doesn't the host machine have to be on and running?

So what happens when the host machine is powered down, and the remote computer wants to surf? What happens if the host machine crashes?
Plus, new routers are probably easier to setup than ICS!

Thanks for the replies. I know I should be plugged into a router anyway, I just haven't taken the time yet. ICS, interesting. The cable modem has 1 firewire jack and 1 usb jack. Can I connect through the usb? (I'd need a usb cable)
It's time for a router anyway, I just would like to get my pc connected so's I can do what I want :hehe:

ICS is a total no brainer...come on it's windows. You can set power options on the host to decrease the amount of electricity your using without powering it completely off. I do a lot of music uploading so mine are running 24/7 anyway. What happens if the router crashes?

HA... well, do what you want. But I think Windows has crashed a few more times than my router! I just think it's silly to have one computer's connection totally dependant on another machine... What if they are for 2 different people?
And if you run your machine 24/7, then ICS may work for you... But most people I know are uncomfortable with leaving their main PC running all the time.
What about the NIC? Do you need 2 of them for ICS?

I'm not trying to promote ICS by any means, just offering up an alternative. I agree if your uncomfortable about leaving you machine running all the time then a router is the best way to go. Yes, two NIC's are required.

brr, this thread is creating more questions. They are for two different users. My GF used to live here, both her and her sister were connected. Apparently some shit got hit by lightning and the cable company came in and set her up dumb asses. I think she used to have a router, but between the two of 'em, it's like "I dunno, I just work here", lol. So, Imma get hot on a router. I think I have some learning to do, basically what I've been putting off

Yep, that seems to be the bottom line. I was hoping I could configure the usb connection. When I plug in the usb, it will recognize the connection, but I can't configure it to work. Which makes me think that the usb is incapable of transfering the information. Thank ya'll for your help
