Morels up in Colorado!!!1!
    #6855637 - 04/30/07 09:22 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

The morels are finally up here in Colorado. After a couple hours of hunting I came up with about 60-80 of them (I didn't bother counting).

Here's a nice photogenic pair.

Happy mushrooming!

toxicman, is there any corolation between there being leaves on the trees and having morels fruiting? I mean obv rain is a huge factor and trees cant sprout leaves without rain, then again tree's probebly dont need as much rain as fungus needs to fruit. I think I just answered my own question.

I have found that the morels start coming up very shortly after the leaves on the cottonwoods start coming out. Up in the mountains, the black morels seem to come up about when the aspen leaves are about dime sized.

For spring mushrooms it's *very* useful to keep track of leaf sizes, various plants that are coming up, and spring flowers in bloom. When the wild peas start blooming the morel season is over for that area. I can usually keep finding morels for a week or two after the poison ivy starts to leaf.

Happy mushrooming!

Cool, just what I was wondering, around here the birch are starting to fruit, and the sweet ferns are popping up. Its been so bloody dry up here, I'm thinking about taking a drive down south to muscoda, that city is a living morel.

If I were in Nebraska I'd probably go out and check this weekend. They should be up real soon, if not already.

Happy mushrooming!

Toxicman: Awesome stuff, are you preserving your finds or treating this as a feasting season?

Wikedferret: Depends on where in Nebraska as well. Around this time last year I went to Nebraska after an dismal season in northeastern Kansas, didn‘t find anything, but it was exceptionally dry.
I would agree with Toxic man, they are likely already going in Nebraska, the differential in fruiting periods between Kansas and Nebraska is not really that great. Much of Iowa usually follows the Kansas season by two or three weeks.
With dedication you might just luck out.

Those are prime Toxic! I haven't been able to find a good amount of yellows this season. The soil looks pretty sandy in that pic. Are you next to a river or lake in cottonwoods?

georgeM, I haven't eaten them yet, they're in the fridge. But I'm planning on eating them this weekend. Still discussing with the wife how we should prepare them.

Ubermensch, I was about 50 yards from the South Platte river.

Happy mushrooming!

How about New Jersey? Most progress maps say that they should be up by now, but we've found nothing. Time to find a new location?
