Upper body exercises..
    #6845619 - 04/28/07 03:08 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

I do pressups / pullups / situps every night.. just before I got to sleep (helps tire me out) and occasionally when I wake up (if I have time)

I've started skating a lot more, and generally being more active.. I have alot more energy now (I've quit smoking buds) and my cardiovascular system is improving .. I can now skate / run for a lot longer

What other exercises can I do to improve my upper body strength? My legs are in pretty good condition (again from the skating)..
I have a set of weights lying around.. but truth be told I don't know how to lift them properly; so I don't bother.

Thanks for any input

standard curls
hammer curls
reverse grip curls

military press(shoulder press)
not sure the name of this one but hand the weights by your side or in front of you if its a bar and lift them stiff armed in front of you up to your shoulder level and slowly back down

for triceps you can you skull crushers

If you want strength make sure your eating enough protein and dont work the same muscles 2 days in a row.

- Benchpress (probably dumbbell benchpress in your case)
- The 3 curls barfightlard mentioned
- Skullcrushers
- Kickbacks
- Shrugs
- Benchdips
- Military Presses
- Arnold Presses
- Deadlifts
- Overhead Dumbbell Extensions
- Bent Over Rows
- Upright Rows
- Wrist Curls (overhand + Underhand))
- Weighted Situps
- Laying Down Pectoral Dumbbell Fly
- Bent Over Dumbbell Rear Delt Raise
- Weighted Pullups (hold the dumbbells between your feet, or between your thighs with your knees up to also work your abs while doing pullups, but this gets complicated...)

The many variations of push-ups and dips have always been the cornerstone to my routine, but maybe that's because I don't really enjoy using weights.

t-nation.com has tons of amazing articles. Bodybuilding.com as already mentioned is also a great place to start. Read the stickies and find a beginner programs such as ripptoes starting strength. If you are really looking to add stregth and/or size you have to actually be dedicated to a routine. Good luck. Lifting weights is a lot of fun!

edit - also make sure not to get sucked into all tha crap you read. People make it way more complicated than it needs to be. You'll see what I mean after a little while.

That's a great point. You can learn plenty by reading but the real learning comes from putting that info into action and trying exercises out and seeing what works.
