I thought the season was over however decided to check one of my favorite spots after reading coons' post. I'll probably just toss them all in my compost as I only eat the truly delicious mushrooms… like Auricularia auricular.
georgeM
Here are a few micrographs taken from these mushrooms. Finding a suitable section was a pain. One broken cover slip, two dull razors, and a weird differential in light sensitivity in my left eye later…

Xmush: I have to say that is the most frightening looking slime mold i have ever seen. You should make cardboard spawn. It could come in handy if you ever wanted to decorate the trees near your local pentecostal church. They would likely suspect demons, then you could see some real action.
Coon: Most of these mushrooms were found growing directly beneath low hanging bows of eastern red cedar (Juniperus viginiana), occasionally at the edge of the drip line however more often than not they were located within the center of cluster of these trees... accessible to eye and hand only by crawling. In these two pictures you will note a lack of green vegetation due to low light and the thick mulch these trees naturally drop. Other trees in the area are mulberry and osage orange a.k.a. hedge. No true elm trees, however Celtis occidentalis or hackberry sporadically occurs in the area and belongs to the same family as elm i.e. Ulmaceae. Eventually I plan to do a full inventory of the flora growing on my 40 acre patch however that is a pretty hefty undertaking. Kansas isn’t generally associated with trees but the diversity is pretty staggering, surpassing that of western states known for their expansive forests.

I broke off the stick and I use it to chase mormons and jehovahs witnesses away from my house. I'm kind of like a torch-wielding yokel from an old horror movie but in reverse.
That was an akward sentence, my brain gets fuzzy when I try to break it down witty-style with georgeM

Hahaha, I have only been visited by a jehovahs witness once.... I was surprised and intrigued, since i had heard about them but never been preached to by one, so I tried to talk to one but as soon as they saw me and my friends, they were like "Uhhh.... We can see you are busy, here are some pamphlets to look over-Bye!" and they were off and speed walking before i could get much anything from them!! Everyone says how they are persistent and hard to get them to go away, so as soon as they left I was like ".... did i just chase off jehovahs witnesses??"
But I kept the pamphlet.

Back in my hitch hiking days there where occasions I would be forced accept rides from Jehovah’s Witnesses out of sheer desperation. They loved having a captive audience. I highly recommend hitch hiking in the vicinity of your local Kingdom Hall (or anywhere for that matter), the experience can be illuminating! One such trip recalled with precision involved a JW lady informing me of the determent my sunglasses were wreaking on my body by preventing the life giving forces of the sun from being absorbed. I doubt that was official church doctrine but it was a fun conversation nonetheless. She offered to introduce me to her daughter, as a ploy to get me into church I assume. Pretty creepy huh. I wonder what direction my life would have taken had I accepted the invitation. Surely a shower and hair cut would have been prerequisites. And of course... their teachings are prohibitive with regard to some of my most beloved vices.

I bet.
I don't know if I would hitch hike.... I meet enough shady people as it is, and San Francisco has a LOT of shady people.

The sun does provide life giving forces that can be absorbed through the eyes. I'm pretty sure there's a study.

Is that a joke? You don't eat morels? I haven't been around long enough to know your humor.
Anyway, messing with the Jehovahs is great fun. When I was in high school I invited them into my parents house with all the fake interest I could muster then proceeded to make them feel uncomfortable. Sometimes, just sometimes, I think this world needs people like them to make life interesting.

Huh. I had no clue morels grew in association with any sort of evergreen. I'll keep that in mind tomorrow when I got morel hunting in Jersey. We climbed a mountain that has a ton of cedar trees at the top. Of course, I'll bring the cam.
