Degrafting Aztekium?
    #6819154 - 04/22/07 01:12 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

I've heard that degrafting an aztekium ritteri is difficult, if not impossible. Has anyone here tried and failed? Or even better, has anyone tried and succeeded? And what about regrafting?

A better question would be, how did you manage to graft them in the first place? My A. ritteri seedlings are the size of pinheads.

If they're grafted to Pereskiopsis, you can probably just remove the lower inch of Pereskiopsis they are attached to, and bury it along with them. Otherwise, slice them off a bit above where the scion is attached to the stock to minimize the exposed surface area, and make sure to let it callous well.

Got any pix?

The seeds just went into the dirt. I was asking because, if they're going to be permanently attached to the stock, I wanted to be careful about what I picked.

As for the grafting process itself, I know a few developmental biologists who do a lot of work with tissue cultures under a microscope. They have the equipment and the practice to get the graph right.

good question. my friend helped me with this graft. im not sure if it took as it still hasnt grown. the scion was originally grafted to pereskiopsis then transfered. if it finally starts growing pups i plan to transfer those to soil o there own roots hopefully.

Well, at least re-grafting should go alright. That's good, since it will be much easier to get the equipment set up to graph the things to a pereskiopsis than it will be to something else. I can put them on a pereskiopsis and move them to a trich or a myrtillo later.

The big problem I keep hearing about is the de-grafting part. They evidently grow so slowly on their own that they take forever to send down new roots, and then they die. So, I'll leave them on a low stock to be on the safe side, and try the de-grafting when I have some pups to spare.

i wonder once thy shrivel too much if a dunk tek would work? maybe high humidity during the long rooting process to lower moisture loss.
