PC question
    #6806825 - 04/18/07 11:01 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

okay, i got a big pressure cooker for my jars....i can fit 7 quart jars into it standing upright with their tops pointing out. i wanted to inoculate 8 jars total, 4 lion's manes and 4 oysters. There is still room in the top of the PC after i pack the bottom with 7 jars, would it be possible to just set an 8th jar on top of the others on its side? this would mean that the glass side of the jar would be on top of all of the metal caps...if i have a hole punched in my jar cap, will i lose too much moisture with it being tipped sideways (i'm doing roger rabbits rye tek, so there shouldn't be any excess stagnant water...)

or should i just do 2 batches of 4.....

oh yeah, do i screw the lids on all the way? or is the hole punched in the cap enough to displace air? do i have to worry about my jars cracking/breaking from too much pressure building up within the jars themselves?

You are a-ok stacking jars sideways. In fact, I stuff the shit out of my 22qt presto that way. Don't screw your lid ring too tight before PC, screw them on till when you feel pressure, let go. If you put them on too tight, they will be hard as hell to untighten after PC and cooled.

Neat cyanescens in your photos BTW. I wish I had a chance to spot some in the wild...

yeah dude, thanks. i've been pretty lucky with my hunting ventures...time to try my hand at culivating though. I only have pics from one of my hunts, but i've found tons of cyans, chantrelles, shaggy parasols, a couple morels, and many other edibles... i need to start bringing my camera with me every time i go into the woods, i usually end up going out for something else, then i see some fungus, and by the time i get back every pocket and bag i have is filled with some fungus...have come back from the woods for some great unexpected feasts on fungus.

Yes you can put your jars on their sides. I run my PC with 10 jars all the time. 7 on bottom, 3 in a triangle on top. Sounds like your PC is the same size. I always have foil on my jar lids so I have no problems with moisture control. Good luck.
