PF Tek Munchkins

Let's say that instead of a standard PF Tek jar, I use a much smaller jar. Is there any reason to believe that with the smaller jar, I will be able to move on to the dunk and roll and fruting steps slightly or moderately earlier than with a standard sized PF Tek jar? I realize I am sacrificing grealy on yield, but assuming speed is of the utmost, might this be a good idea? If so, what's the smallest jar I should try? 1 oz [which is about one tenth the size of a standard jar], 2 oz, 4 oz?

id stic w 1/2 pt as the smallest if you want them to colonize faster just inject more spores. u do realize that 1 oz is only the size of a typical shot glass?

Okay, could you please explain a bit why you don't think it's a good idea to go below the half pint? Also I was under the impression that injecting more spores about maybe 2 cc's per half pint will not really increase colonization rate but does increase risk of contamination.

Actually, it's smaller.. a standard shot glass is one and a half ounces.

Because the PF Tek has been around for years and it says 1/2 pint... MASTERS of mycology have been over and over the PF Tek, and it is what it is. There is probably some scientific reason 1/2 pint is best, but I don't know it.
However, I do know that the golden rule of the PF Tek is, "If you need the PF Tek, you don't know enough to start experimenting".

I believe the reason for increased contamination is due to more moisture than what is field capacity. However, the greater number of spores, by theory, makes for faster colonization. Perhaps if you were to compensate in advance, it would lessen the risk. Another thing that might help is to make a darker syringe.

Personaly I think it would work. 1/2 pint might be the best overall, but I think you could get away with using a much smaller jar. But you might only get 1 or 2 small shrooms from it also....so, all depends. And water content is a big issue, more water in the jar, more risk of contams. Use the 2/1/1 ratio(2 parts verm, 1 part brf, 1 part water), and then inject maybe only .5ml of solution in each jar. Darker syringes will more than likely speed up colinization more so than just injecting more solution. Especially since the jars are so small, you don't want to inject very much in. Thats my 2 cents. Good luck! Hope everything works out for you whatever you decide to do!

The standard jar IS the 4 oz jar, so 1 oz is one quarter the size, not one tenth.
Instead of using a smaller jar, you could just reduce the depth of the BRF cake and increase the depth of the vermiculite barrier layer.
According to the original tek you can use up to 3cc of spore solution to inoculate a 1/2 pint jar.

Yeah, but if you already put in more then enough water in the mixture, and then if a little extra moisture got in there when steaming the jars, 3cc is gonna be too much. Plenty to pool on the bottom of that jar.
Another thing is that if the moisture content is high, its better to have loose lids rather than tightened.
