Indigo Wheat - Any Good For Shiitake Spawn?
    #6785928 - 04/14/07 04:54 AM (17 years, 7 days ago)

I have the chance of purchasing a mixed corn mix for using to grow Shiitake spawn. It consists of Indigo Wheat (higher protein content than normal wheat), kibbled Corn (maize) and Barley. Are these cereals ok for Shiitake, especially Barley?

Would this mix be better than Wild Bird Seed that I amcurrentlyusing? I don't want to spend time removing the peanuts and sunflower seeds from the WBS anymore.

Thanks
Goody54321.

Don't confuse supplements with grain spawn. You put supplements into the sawdust when you make the blocks up, prior to sterilization. You want 'brans' which have more nutrients than flours. The wbs or rye is your spawn that you use to inoculate the sawdust/chip blocks after they cool.

I was hoping to use the indigo wheat (with kibbled maize and barley) as spawn (instead of the WBS I currently use) to then colonise my sawdust / woodchip / oat bran blocks.

My query really was whether or not a high protein wheat would be any better than normal wheat for shiitake spawn?

Thanks

I don't know about the kibbled corn being good for growing. As for the wheat and barley though it should be fine for spawn. I have used rye, oats, and wheat. They all seem to work just fine. As long as the kernles aren't krimped.
