    #6762089 - 04/08/07 05:12 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

okay so Ive got popcorn in pint jars (b+) incubating at 86d should i shake the jars like gains or leave them be, Ive heard both ways. is it just a preference thing? or will just it take longer to reach 100% if i don't shake?

P/corn is the worst possible spawn.

But, shake the jars mildly @ around 35 colonization.

maybe one of you can answer this ...does the freshness of a spore effect the germination time?

well its my first try with popcorn it was appealing in the teks a various post i read this was the first i heard that it carried allot of green mold. but i am fairly new at this, and arp i may sound like a lesser being by this but by isolate you mean...?(something to do with isolating myc in a agar tek or something?)

I found this is a search...hope it helps:snowman:
Shake the grains every 4 or 5 days till they are fully colonized.
One guy used a coco coir casing mixed with some vermiculite and the results were amazing. The popcorn colonizes very rapidly and is very easy to shake. Hope this helps, I know I am filing this in my archive.

1 more thing
Make shure you shake the jars good after you pull them out of the pressure cooker and after you inoculate

These are part of a PF Classic harvest that were grown from popcorn
Good luck:mushroom2:
Spawn them to H-Poo

I would use coco-coir and verm as a casing
I dont like fucking with peat

I would use Roadkills H-Poo tek if i was you, major jump in potency doing it that way

Actually, it's best not to shake at inoculation in order to allow the spores to germinate in close proximity to each other. Horse manure does not increase potency.

Corn does not harbor green mold. Molds are killed off by temperatures well below boiling. It has a high bacterial endospore count, but that's not the only reason it's inferior to other grains. The main reason is that the large kernel size means you have far less mycelium per jar than you'd have with traditional grains such as rye or wbs. It takes at least four jars of popcorn to have the same amount of mycelium as one similar sized jar of rye or wbs. That's why it's rarely used anymore. I recently tossed out a huge bag of it, because I don't like getting popped corn stuck in my teeth, and it sucks as a spawn medium, unless you have no other options. Good luck.

I am not using multi spore inoculating my corn Roger but what you said about the size as far as mycelium content makes good sense

I will use WBS or Rye from here on out
Im glad you are here :mushroom2::yesnod:

My comments from another P/corn post.

Millet has approximately 80,000 to 220,000 seeds per pound
(depending on type)

Grain Sorghum (Milo) has approximately 16,000 seeds per pound

Rye has approximately 14,000 seeds per pound
(+/- 8% depending on source of origin)

Popcorn has approximately >>1300<< kernels per pound.

By size alone, popcorn loses.
By price alone popcorn loses.

Corn kernels harbor more endospores than the above grains.
Popcorn (once hydrated) is more prone to bacterial contamination than the above grains.

Hey, it works.
It's just not near as good as millet, Milo or rye.
(or, any combination of those)

Popcorn should be popped & eaten, with salt & butter added.
It makes a nice snack, while PC'ing better spawn grains.

The significance of which is the smaller the grain, the more total surface area, and the less wasted space between them, thus more mycelium per any given sized jar. Even if wbs or rye took twice as long to colonize a quart jar, it would still be nearly 6 times faster than popcorn, because more than 12 times as much mycelium would have been produced. It's all in the math.

Seeing as I have never used it I cant say anything good or bad about it and it does seem like some people love it and some people hate it,I am a rye guy and don't see that changing anytime soon,I have had some success with cracked corn a while back but I would say that I even like birdseed better and I don't like bird seed all that much at all

There's a perfectly good thread, started by yours truly, that illustrates popcorn's pros and cons...Perhaps we could save some board space if we kept the debate there and just stuck to answering the popcorn questions as they arise...

That said...I'm posting my latest popcorn results/feelings on the aforementioned thread...
