WBS question
    #6724992 - 03/29/07 03:16 PM (17 years, 22 days ago)

I want to try and use WBS spawn in quart jars to start up horse poop substrates, but I have seen that most people just add it to a coir and verm based casing and go from there to the fruiting chamber. Anybody think that colonizing pasteurized horse poop with WBS spawn a good idea? Should I put the substrates in the incubator to colonize the poop?

Even without an incubator I had good luck with popcorn and horse poop but now I want to try the same thing with WBS.

Feedback would be much appreciated.

WBS spawned to poop is a pretty standard way to go, you case with the verm and coir after it's colonised. You shouldn't really need an incubator with bulk either as it generates a lot of its own heat.

What you want to do will work fine basically.

WBS doesnt have enough (if any) nutritional value in it to be used as a fruiting substrate. coir and verm are inert. we spawn WBS to poo cuz poo has the most nutritional value - which means healthy, potent shrooms.

Wait, wbs has a substantial amount of nutritional value. That along with being so small and having so many points of contact is why it is a desired spawn.
Granted it doesn't fruit that well on its own but that is where coir can come in if desired over poo/straw.
Coir isn't inert and does have nutritional value and also holds water very well. That is why everyone uses it as an alternative bulk substrate now. Coir makes a poor casing layer due to its nutritional value and should only be used in such a mix in small amounts.
On the other hand, you're right about verm.
