Moistening perlite
    #6717912 - 03/27/07 08:28 PM (17 years, 24 days ago)

I'm sure this has been dicussed, but I did a search on the subject and couldn't find the exact answer I was looking for. When you use perlite (damp, I know, not wet), do you have to add more water to it periodically to keep the humidity up? If so, how much and how often?

I recently read something about this, search Hippie3's/Link's posts...

I think it's actually supporting that it's ok to having standing water/h2o2 within the perlite given that there is enough air exchange...

The thread i'm talking about, turns into a schoolyard sissy match between Hippie3 (mycotopia's top dog) and Link (one of shroomery's admins) It's actually pretty funny

I put all my perlite in a strainer and pour a fair amount of water over it until it's all moist.

I mist it about every 4-5 days. After a few weeks dump out the old perlite and put new in. This has worked great for me.

There should be zero standing water in the perlite. Standing water makes the perlite below the waterline useless. Three to five inches of well drained perlite will maintain humidity for over a month. In addition, there should be drain holes in the floor of the terrarium. Misting the cakes adds plenty of moisture to the perlite. Even if the perlite on the very top dries, what is below doesn't.

Remove, rinse well, and drain between crop cycles and you can use the same perlite for years.
