crushed oysters from driveway - safe to use?
    #6696037 - 03/21/07 04:39 PM (17 years, 12 days ago)

My neighbor has oyster shells in his driveway. Could I take them, crush them, risne them off and add to casing material and be safe if I pressure cooked my casing mix?

You will find, they are as tough to crush/grind into flour powder.
As regular rock gravel.:eek::mad2:

Unless you have a mini - rock crusher, forget it.

Egg shells would be a better choice.
If you cannot find other calcium carbonate, or oyster shell flour.

NONE..............:eek:

If it is not a FINE flour like powder.
It has little or no effect, in the short term.
It would have some effect, in months & years.

This is what I use for a buffer.
But, only after adjusting Ph to 7.5 or 8, with hydrated lime.

I never used it for mushrooms but come to think of it I still have bags of "Calci-sand" from back when my spare room was dedicated to herpetology and mot mycology,is it completely useless,I mean it is pretty fine,like sand

If it is tiny tiny sand, it will work;
as a medium to long term casing buffer.
Not real short term.
Limestone rocks, pebbles & sand, is not SOLUBLE.

Either use calcium carbonate powder, from a beer brew supply.
Or, use garden type hydrated lime, for quick results.

To be of use quickly, a buffer must be soluble.
Or, at lease semi-soluble.
just my opinion.

lol, wish I could be the reporting officer on the vandalism call just so I could hear your explanation for why you were busting up your neighbors drive. :laugh:

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.
