Looking into the eyes of an awakened being
    #6684077 - 03/18/07 03:28 PM (17 years, 1 month ago)

Today I went to my father's Mahayana Buddhist center and sat in on the teaching of an American Lama. He stuck to very simple concepts, ideas like cultivating compassion, seeing other sentient beings as you would your mother, stilling the mind. My ego found itself very frustrated by the end of his talk; I wanted to poke a hole in his teaching, ask him about the transient nature of existence, about the Zen worldview, the voidness of form, et cetera. I felt that his talk was jejune, his answers somewhat superficial. I looked at him from my meditation cushion in the back of the room and he seemed to deliberately avoid my stare. Aha! He could sense my awakened-ness, and was afraid to make eye contact.

Nevertheless, as the session went on and we did some basic meditation, I felt a calm centeredness in the room; naturally I assumed it must be emanating from me - I was feeling so high!

After the teaching we went out to lunch; the Lama (a somewhat elderly man, short, balding, with horn-rimmed glasses and a brusque Arkansas accent) changed out of his dark lavender robes into jeans and a t-shirt. I spoke with some of the other members frmom the center as we waited in line at Chipotle, feeling so spiritually superior; so high.

I hadn't said a word to the Lama in all this time. As I was leaving, we made eye contact for a second. All I could blurt out was, "It was nice to meet you!" even though I had not spoken with him or even made eye contact prior. We shook hands.

Almost instantly upon making eye contact with him, a change came over me. I sensed such infinite serenity in his gaze that it pierced through me; I was suddenly a leaf at the mercy of the wind, an infant. I had to avert my eyes; I chuckled nervously as I made my way out of the restaurant, casting a glance back at the man, who had already begun to eat.

The experience had no tangible effect on me other than that it provoked in my a longing to see him again, to sit next to him and listen to him speak, to learn his meditative techniques.

I'll have to meditate on it more; I just thought it was an interesting experience to share, a powerful confirmation that there is pure consciousness in this world, that there are Bodhisattvas who work tirelessly on themselves in order to liberate others.

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

beginners mind, as in, one who has realized his beginning?  and expert as in, one who has a collection of thought which allows for less possibilitiy?

which mind do you speak of?

your words have different meanings to everybody, care to elaborate?

that's cool that you got to chill with a "Lama" at Chipotle (no pun intended).

just out of curiosity, what kind of burrito did he order?

From Wikipedia:

"Shoshin (初心, also pronounced nyuanshin) is a concept in Zen Buddhism meaning Beginner's Mind. It refers to having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions when studying a subject, even when studying at an advanced level, just as a beginner in that subject would. The term is especially used in the study of Zen Buddhism and Japanese martial arts.

The phrase was also used as the title of Zen teacher Shunryu Suzuki's book: Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, which reflects a saying of his regarding the way to approach Zen practice: In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, in the expert's mind there are few."

Very subjective. It could have been something you ate.

I've felt that way about gurls and then when I got to know em. Well...:tongue2:

I can vouch for the validity of your experience bug. I had one at a Buddhist conference from a monk who had met the Dalai Lama no less.

I wouldn't cling to it though, avoid the ego games.

Its nice to have such an experience. It strengthens ones faith in the teacher. Next time he will probably be a lot more open, attentive and respectful to the teaching.

But yea, don't be attached to it. It was a teaching.
