Dark Star Orchestra better than The Dead?

Don't get me wrong, I respect the Dead more than any other band out there, but it seems like the quality of Dark Star's music rivals the Deads.
I have never seen the dead live so maybe I shouldnt be making such an assumption, but I have litsened to over 5 days of there live shows. Sometimes Dark Star's music gets into such complex dimentions that all I can do is dance with a huge smile across my face while floating in a glorious light. I specialy like how Dark Star adds incredible jams to Dead songs like Cassidy, which doesn't originally have an extended, spacy jam.
I don't know, what do you think?

Fucking blasphemy.
Dark Star Orchestra is the shit though...but NOT THE DEAD. If it's not the dead it's not the same.

Yeah, comparison of The Dead and a Dead cover band is just ludicrous. I like DSO, but give me a break!

I have some Dark Star shows that I got from archive and I swear to you that I have litsened to them more than some of my favorite Dead shows. The guy that sings for bobby has a much better voice in my oppinion and the female vocalist tears Donna apart.
I don't really enjoy comparing things like this either, I all my music equally.
Just wanted to see what others think.

Another point i'd like to make is the venues that Dark Star plays in. Its incredible standing so close to the band, which is something damn near impossible with the way the Dead were. They only played big stadiums after they made it big.

I love them both, but I do love the intimacy of the DSO shows.

you hit the nail on the head with the intimacy issue...thats why i love DSO..sit front and center and get your face melted.

Better than the Dead? You mean the real Grateful Dead that made American Beauty and Workingman's Dead and so on?

Well they try pretty hard to really cover them well. if they didn't they suck. But to say the student is better then the master is fucked up. They did nothing but copy.
I still rock out to them fuckin HARD!

Thanks to this thread I decided to look them up on ticketmaster, and they're playing at one of my favorite venues in 19 days. Stoked!
my only previous live dead experience has been Phil & Friends and the Rhythm Devils. Haven't even seen bobby yet. This is gonna be good

The most succint way that I can sum up Dark Star Orchestra is that they are true to the spirit of the Grateful Dead while putting on excellent shows. I've never left thinking I didn't get more than my money's worth.
Consider checking out local musicians. jambase.com is your friend. At most local shows I spend between $0 and $5 for my musical entertainment. That's cheaper than a movie.

Have a great time and try to dose before the show if you can. Dark Star is by far my favorite band out there right now.
