I've been looking all over town for vermeculite. Everyone is out of it. I see bare shelves where it's supposed to be, and when I ask am told that they've ordered it, but it hasn't come in.
Does anyone know what the deal here is? I've tried Lowe, Home Depot, Walmart, and 2 ACE harware stores all with nil results.
Never had any luck with grain and am really concerned about this.
Any info or ideas of what to use in place of vermeculite greatly appreciated.

This seems to be a very big problem, however my local nursery has vermiculite 365 days a year. Perhaps instead of going to all the big chain stores, you should try a store that only sells gardening supplies. If you can't find it locally, you can always shop online and have it delivered to your door. Here's a URL for one of many places you can buy vermiculite online. Hope this helps.

I used crushed up red clay flower pots instead of verm and they been workin fine

Yes..it seems like local small garden stores carry it. Franks here has it but now they only carry the damn super fine shit so mission is on, same with ace hardware and Bachman's aswell.

There probally just sold out b/c its prime time season right now for planting all kinds of stuff. Every time I have went to lowes, they always have a crap load and they have all year round to. Maby check some local plant stores or any other store that has garden stuff and if you still dont find none, then just order off the net.

Try Lowes if it is in your area. Shit they had all my supplies needed. Verm/ Peat moss, jiffy mix, hydrated lime, coco coir...

This is a little funny. I sent my friend to home depot to pick me up some verm. She came back and told that they said, "Vermiculite has been outlawed. We can't sell it anymore." I thought this was a little odd since so many things have verm in it. I called Frank's Nursery and they laughed at me and said they had a shitload. I called another Home Depot (just in case Frank's hadn't heard yet) and they told me the other Home Depot must have been on crack. I think it's slightly out of season right now so thats probably where your problem lies. Just get a phonebook and call every place under "Garden." You'll be sure to find it

AFAIK...
There have been some past issues with vermiculite due to asbestos contamination.
Maybe that's what they're referring to?

About a year and a half ago there was a rumor that verm was being outlawed because the dust is hazardous to your health. There could be some truth to that because i'm finding it much harder to find myself. The local home depot does carry it but it only comes in those giant bags and the grade is to large. I tried Kmart, target, and walmart and none of them had it. I ended up getting some at a hydroponics store.

I get the huge 4 square foot bags of Verm..... from Home Depot.
I'd say that if your Home Depot doesn't have Verm....get them to order it the fuck in.
I know for a fact that Lowes and True Value Hardware will order in Verm for there customers.
They will also order in Perlite.
The asbestos scare stuff is getting old......that shit happened awhile back.
These fucking stores need to pull there heads out of there ass's!!!
If you can't find Verm in your town......quite a few of the Vendors are carrying Verm now.....check the Vendors pages and you will find Verm.

yeah i went to home depot, last weekend, looking for it nobody carries it around here. home depot said they dont carry it anymore because its said to give you cancer... (yeah i was confused too).

yeah i drove for 3 hours the other day getting supplies..... cans were no problem.... but good god...... i drove a 30 mile radius at least finding Verm..... none at home depot, lowes, forget walmart........ only on nursery i found had it, so i got 3 bags. should go get more while i can it looks.....

I've also purchased the 4 cu. ft. bags of vermiculite at Home Depot. It's manufactured by "Therm-O-Rock" and is sold as insulation material.
