Wow! That takes me back... I'm assuming you're talking about the Homestead Mushroom Kit. After seeing it in a head shop (here in the States), I tried it twice, once in the late 80's and again in 1994. Both times it cost around 80 bucks. This was, of course, before I knew about PF or any other technique. I also had no real knowledge of mycology.

That being said, the kit may have improved since then, but my experience with it was horrible... and not just because I was a n00b.

Basically, the kit was a waste of time and money. The instructions were incomplete and had no real information on sterile technique at all. For a first-timer, isolating from a nasty spore print on agar with no foreknowledge of sterile technique (or the associated equipment) is... well, impossible! Considering it was a dung-based kit, I really don't see how they expected it to EVER work for a beginner.

And no one that has any real mycology experience would have used the inferior quality materials that the kit had in it anyway.

As I said though, things may have changed since 1995. Personally, I can't believe the thing is still for sale!

Do it yourself, your yeild will be much higher if you spend that 120 dollars on materials instead of sending someone else shopping for you imo.

for 120.00 bucks,i would watch for a pressure cooker on ebay ,spend maybe 90.00 on that then go buy 2 rubbermaid totes and some wild bird seed, get some poop and bam bulk grow..do some research before wasting your money on a kit like that ,thats my 2 cents:)

Research is essential when starting out.

Sterile technique...unforgiving when not present.

Patience...the key to perfecting your technique, increasing knowledge, and the fine-tuning other skills as well.

I personally urge you (probably right along with Blutjager, and Magash himself) to get the pressure cooker, and set sail with this tek: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=2&Number=4576865&fpart=&PHPSESSID=

Thanks to Magash for the tek, and Blut' for the increased interest.

I'm doing a Homestead kit right now, found it before I found this site. I'm just getting my first mushies growing right now. Kit is an easy way to start actually in my opinion, you don't need any other equipment than the kit comes with, and it is actually quite sterile to work with. It comes with a predone rye bag w/ filter, you just untape part of it and drop a q-tip that has spores into the rye (all done without opening the rye bag) and incubate. Mycelium grows then transfer to the pre pasturized cow poo and wait. Started mine on Feb 7 and first shrooms (about 1") found today.

It's not the same kit from decades ago.

Pricey, yes, but simple and nearly idiot proof.

You get a pre-sterilized bag of rye berries. The bag is tied off in the middle. Above the berries in the upper part is a q-tip with spores. Remove the tape and loosen the string to drop the spores into the bag. Shake and incubate. When colonized you spawn the berries into a plastic tub of kowanite. No casing. Tub is pre-drilled for FAE. SWIM got 17g dry on the first flush, six weeks start to harvest.

If you've got the money and looking for something simple and stealthy, this may be the kit for you.

Ah, this is definitely NOT the way it was in 1995! Rye berries? They give you a tub? Neat... obviously, they've improved the kit somewhat.

Still... kit, schmitt, it ain't worth 120 bucks! IMO, for a beginner, PF works 99% of the time, and costs next to nothing.

Thought it's been a good educational aid, besides what I've learned on here. Already stepping up my game to PF-tek and LC's and beyond, but overall I'm not disappointed I spent the money. Like Hipster said, it's pretty much idiot proof!

Go for it B, I've spent more than that on equipment for the other methods, and it's alot less work with the kit. They have refills for like $80 bucks (rye bag, and 5lbs. compost), or you can get just the compost for like $30.

Sure u can get a spore print from one of the harvest, and go from there with all the info on this site. Don't know about how many flushes yet, just getting my first shrooms coming up today from the first flush at 5 weeks. I believe the strain is B+ that comes with the kit.

i just started with the cheapest materials(a two-liter pop bottle, one spore syringe, vermiculite, brown rice flower, half pint jars, ect.) and then slowly advanced my grow set-up and i learned more.

when i first started, i wasn't sure if i would stick with it, but when i was successful the first time, i knew what my new hobby was going to be.

start out cheap and go from there.

The strain is B+.

Expect at leat three or maybe more flushes.

You can get kowanite directly from mushroomjohn. $25 for a ten pound bag includes shipping and an extra filter patch bag. Ten pounds will refill the homestead tub five times (2 pounds each time). The compost should be used within two months of receiving it. Check the shroomery sponsors for spores, syringes and pre-sterilized grains/jars/bags.

First off, I would not buy a grow kit & spore combination.
Anyone selling such a thing.
Is prone to state/federal investigation.
with a charge of conspiracy to MANUFACTURE:
They get busted, and have a paper trail.
You might be in for whatever.

For the price of a couple of those kits.
You could buy a decent PC.
A couple cases of quart canning jars.
Some Wbs.
Some h/poo.
Some trays.
A coolmist.
A 4 tier green house.
And, everything else required.
To do grow after grow, year after year.

right on agar! fuck kit's, if you arnt willing to do something complicated and learn about the field of mycology then in my opinion you shouldn't be growing shrooms at all,

to beginners nowadays theres no such thing as "mycology" theres just "dude i can grow my own drugs" and that mindset is going to be the downfall of mycology, i mean you never hear anyone say "damn man i wanna be a mycologist" you just hear "damn man i wish i could get shrooms for free".

my point being growing your own high's is a fun and very rewarding thing to do, but why not learn a little about mycology in the process, don't settle for the shitty yields of a brf cake, learn about agar work, learn about wbs/rye (its not as hard for a newb to do as ppl try to make you believe), learn about casing's and and different substrates , coir, hpoo, compost, etc,

sorry for ranting, good luck newb's

peace out
