Cement
    #6671539 - 03/15/07 03:12 AM (17 years, 1 month ago)

Does anybody see anything wrong with adding a small amount of cement to a coir substrate to help bind it together? Most of the time,no matter how hard I try, coir will fall apart on me when I harvest.
Just an idea... any thoughts?

Cement, heh, that's a good one.

I'm not sure how to answer your question, but I know cement would not be a good idea.

I have never done it,or even heard of anyone doing it but it doesn't sound like a good idea to me

I've never heard about cement being used with anything mycological...I think one primary disadvantage to using cement would be that there wouldn't be many pathways for the mycelium to grow through.

And asides from that...where did you get the idea to use cement? Maybe you can supplement the coir with other nutrients so that the myc will hold it together better.

lol, while technically cement is nothing more than crushed stone and calcium carbonate mixed with sand and water, the amount of lime present makes the whole mixture very caustic to the point of killing anything it would come into contact with.

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.

We go to great lenghts to make our substrates and casing mixtures loose and airy. We don't want them sticky.

Furthermore, it's the mycelium that holds a substrate together, not the substrate itself.

WBS bricks(NOT breaks) up real nice and solid when fully colonized --->> obviously an indicator that the mycelium is what is holding it together

ive never seen a mushroom grow out of a cement road before....however morels are said to grow sometimes up through gravel and i think gravel is crushed cement so...who knows?

i don't think i woudl use it for substrate but maybe added to a casing?

Wet cement has a pH of 12 to 13. Great for driveways, but not for growing anything. Period.
