oysters here rate them plz(one question also)
    #6663176 - 03/12/07 10:17 PM (17 years, 21 days ago)

This is my first oyster grow and im quite happy!
Tell me how I did.
strain is pearl mushrooms

I think these aborted because i had the humidity to low (lower and upper range was 68%rh-80%rh) My humidity is now (75-88 ish)

my question is when should i expect spores?

I was assuming they would have dropped by now, it looks like they might get a little bit bigger as their is still a little lip left on them. im not expecting much more growth .

thx

p.s. this was a bag of wbs/sawdust

Spores should be dropping now - they're white so they don't stand out in contrast against the mushroom body, I guess.

Spores should be dropping by now. Otherwise the block might have gotten too dry to support sporulation.

They'll be dropping soon. Those look pretty good. If anything, perhaps a bit more air exchange. Oysters are horribly intolerant of CO2 levels much above ambient. That's what causes them to have stems. At ambient CO2 levels, the caps will form almost right from the substrate. The stems are tough and not good for much but soup, so anything you can do to get caps only is preferred.

Those aborts are quite normal. Anytime there's a really large cluster forming, some of them nearly always abort. It's as if the mycelium realizes it needs to cull a few to give the rest a better chance.

yeah thats sorta what i was worried about, it having gotten to dry, guess ill have to crank it up a little more and hope for no condensation.

i checked them just now still no spores and my humidity was at 90% for a high, i have started misting them since i started this post (morning evening)

guess ill just have to clone this on agar if spores dont' drop and hope for spores next time

I grew blue oysters and did not get an spores from the first flush, even though the fruits looked okay. I believe mine also got too dry. I was using a plastic bag with holes in it around the jar and misting it twice a day, but it would dry out by then because the humidity in the room is so low here during the winter. So I put them in a plastic tub which I fanned twice a day, but the 2nd flush gave me the "snake oysters" I talked about here because of not enough air exchange. I then left the container open a crack, monitoring the humidity and adjusting the size of the crack to keep it at 85%. My 3rd flush produced spores which could be seen on foil.

turns out they were dropping spores the whole time. The spores fell so evenly, and the paper made it hard to see them.

i harvested and threw some on some waxpaper for prints

i cooked them up with butter and onions, i cut all the stem off, they were still a little chewy however.

Overall they weren't bad, but they got cold fast on the plate and once they got cold they were nasty.

im thinkin oysters = soup only

wax paper is def. the way to go for prints thow
