humidity too high for casing?
    #6659523 - 03/11/07 07:58 PM (17 years, 21 days ago)

i read that humidity for casings needs to be lower than cakes. how do i keep my humidity lower without drying out my casing before the first flush? i feel like i need to keep spraying it because they always look a bit dryer.

how important is it for the humidity to stay at 90? one casing is two cakes spawned to coir then cased with mgmc, and the other is 4 cakes cased with coir/verm, then patched with mgmc. i fan about 5 or 6 times a day. thanks alot for your help

no such thing as too much humidity. unless it's 100% of course.

i m pretty sure that mushrooms need evaporition for maximum growth and that the humidity needs to be about 90 for that. come on people i need a solution. i know some body out there has the answer. i need some old hands in here please folks. thanks

whatever dude...i've never grown mushrooms so don't listen to me. if you're so sure why are you asking? evaporation is going to take place always. humidity doesn't control evaporation as much as temp.

You want 95% to 98% humidity for primordia formation. If you give plenty of air exchange, the casing layer will be evaporating plenty of moisture that will have to be replenished by misting. You don't want to lower it to 90% until the fruits are established, if even then. I like to keep it high the whole cycle.

The point is not that humidity for cased substrates needs to be lower than for cakes, it's that a cased substrate can tolerate a slightly lower humidity, but cakes NEED to be at 98% to 100% humidity.

I assume you are using perlite for your humidification? If you are using perlite, do a search for +auto +FAE and check out RR's idea.

Here is the link:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6651983#6651983

I recently attempted my first casing and I think my RH was too high, pegged at 99+, and I wound up with a case of Verticillium, brown streaks down the side and hairlip caps...I'm fairly sure that this was due to the high humidity and not enough FAE (only fanned 3 times a day). I am currently attempting to use RR's Auto FAE Tub idea to see if it will work with my environment.

However, Magash (and others I assume) will tell you that they had no problem at all with a high RH for their casings. I assume that they had a good method for FAE.

Thats my $.02
