y do i always read about using duck tape or tinfoil to keep light out of ur casing??? ive yet to read anything about using some black spray paint. is there a reason for this or does nobody wanna go through the effort of spray paint?

it kinda doesnt matter about flaking if u paint the exterior of the container.  i just think it would be more efficient than having to mess with foil or duck tape which u would have to replace when u can spend the same amount of money on a can of paint and be set.

The reason for spray painting is so mushroom pins don't form on the bottom. You won't be able to get them out and they end up rotting. A better way that has worked for me is to put down a layer of perlite, then your substrate, then your casing layer. I rarely have a problem with pins forming on the bottom.

Krylon has a brand of cheapo vinyl-dye in their spray paint isles now that is marketed to people who want to paint their lawn chairs and kid's jungle gyms. It works but it's cheap. I used it for a lot of my case mods...

That being said, easy-bake glad ovenware. $4.00 each, black tray with clear top, look in your grocery store.

Bus Boy Trays

OR

Simply NEST 2 trays together.
With aluminum foil between them.

Painting plastic trays is a pain in the ass & not very effective.

GladWare oven trays work fine for small grows.

Very good to know, when I do decide to step it up a little.  Do you have any pointers towards likely retailers or  should I search the archives?

Lol...I started painting the outside of my casing containers as well. They do reek if you don't give them enough air time. However, it is dirt cheap..better than tinfoil imo..(other than being able to peek at contams) Tinfoil reflects too much light and causes lotsa unwanted pins, especially when casings start to shrink. I do like garbage bags when i have extra containers to use though. Never had a problem with myc growth slowing from the fumes...and if you have a problem working with the fumes...try working maintenance for a week. lol

Are there "Smart & Final" warehouse stores where you live?
They carry busboy trays (about $5 each).

If not, check your local yellow pages, for restaurant supply.

I've always thought it'd be a really good idea, assuming one is using a TiT incubator, to have a third tub (or use the top TiT tub) to use as the casing container.
Incubate the jars. Then use the exact same sized tub for the casing. Just plop it right onto the bottom TiT tub until it's time to fruit.

This is, of course, assuming that one's TiT is made of opaque containers.

krylon vinyl dye might be a solution but I would just find black plastic tubs.  I saw HUGE (small) mortar tubs at home depot for $4.00 in the masonry section...heh
