if any of you remember me posting about my tail-chasing cat.. the one that would bite himself so hard he would cry...
well, it turns out that he's straight crazy.
about two weeks ago we noticed a little scab on the end of his tail, and said we would take him to the vet asap. Turns out that ASAP wasn't until we got back from PA about a week later.. last tuesday. We come home to find out that the cat had chewed the tip of it's tail off.. down to the bone, it was pretty nasty. I managed to bandage it up, make him a little home-made radar collar (pics to come), and took him to the emergency vet the next day.. the vet there thought maybe it was caused by some sort of allergy to plastic in the food bowl, or the food itself... gave him some steroids, wrapped his tail up proper and put on a real collar... $216!
So, we made an appointment with our regular vet.. at some point the cat got his bandage off and i had to re-wrap it. My gf took him in and the vet re-wrapped his tail and suggested we let the tail heal up more and bring the cat back to be looked at again. Today i took him in for that examination, and the vet said his tail looked good enough that the bandage could come off...
I left him in the apartment when i went to work today.. he had tried to get his tail a couple times, but then he settled down and went to sleep. My gf got home tonight, and not long after the cat bit the entire tip of his tail off.. pulled out some sort of ligament, tendon or nerve, too!
We had joked at first that he was paranoid-schizophrenic... or OCD cat.. or something similar.. and, now that we have read around and heard similar from the vet.. it looks like that is exactly the problem.
Solution? Bob his tail and put him on meds..
what a fucking un-real situation. I feel really bad for him though.. he's terrified of this thing that is always attached to him... so, we've got to get rid of it for him. Off he'll go tomorrow or the next day.. as soon as the vet can squeeze him in.
info we found: http://www.vetinfo.com/cathair.html
[edit] the initial html link wouldn't work because it was formatted weird.. here's the original pdf: http://www.lifelearn.com/c3/2005Feline%20Compulsive%20Disorders.pdf
again.. really crazy!
poor cat.

This is sad but I can't help laughing because I can picture my old cat doing this. He had problems too. Cats do the funniest shit though.

My cat goes schizo and plays with his tail when he's on his back, sometimes. There's no need for vet to tell me he's crazy.

the point is you coulda just replaced the damn thing without having to spend a penny in the process, you know (believe it or not - people do actually give these fuckers away) and I bet you a million dollars the free cat you got to replace it with wouldn't try to eat itself alive either
but nnnooooo you wanted your cat (retaded as he may be)
and apparently that flee-bitten furball was worth the cost of one helluva a night of parting (or, you know, any number of other things that are probably a better way of blowing your many anyhow)

yeah.. i like the cat.. even if he's sort of handicapped... $216 could have been spent on a lot of other things.. but, i had no problem spending it on the cat.. I have plenty of money left for partying..
you should try moving out of your parent's basement, getting a job, and saving.. you'll realize that $216 is not really that much money.. that having a pet is a pretty satisfying thing.. and that acting like a retard as a human is way worse than being one as a cat.

it's not about $216 being a lot of money...it's about it being entirely too much to blow on something so utterly rediculous as 'saving' some worthless pet that could be utterly replaced free of charge
that's like saying it's well worth the hundred and forty thousand dollars I just spent to spend six months scrounging the ocean floor for a penny that rolled offa the deck the last time I was ona cruise
it's a fucken penny for christ's sake - there's a hundred billion of em out there...get a new one already and shut the fuck up

For the record, I love animals and would spend a fortune to save one of my own.
I get attached to the little buggers.

there's no replacing a pet, really..
you've obviously never had one of your own.. and don't care to.. which is fine..
but, until you've reached the level of understanding to differentiate between a pet and a penny.. we'll just agree to disagree..
go elsewhere now.. thank you.

Ahhh I'm really sorry to hear that!
Most cats are sorta nutty, but that sounds extreme.
My cat has been licking all the fur off her belly recently. Apparently that happens to a lot of cats, but the tail thing just sounds awful.
Hopefully he'll feel better once it's gone.

...true...
but let me ask you this - how 'easy' was/is it to get attatched to a pet in the first place? and more importantly - how easy would it be to get attached to a new one once the one you have is gone?
sure you're gonna miss any animal that's been a part of your family once they're no longer there, but there's always a new pet that comes along to fill that void...and that void IS going to have to be filled sooner or later (they don't live as long as you do, after all)
so then, why is it worth going out of your way for something knowing that sooner or later you're gonna have to move on eventually anyways?
