Dunking and rolling
    #6614960 - 02/26/07 11:13 PM (17 years, 1 month ago)

I was wondering, is dunking and rolling good only to rehydrate depleted cakes or is it beneficial immediately after birthing before 1st flush?

dunking befoe 1st flush is highly recomended to increase yields, and the rolling in dry verm helps pinning.

When I birth cakes I open the jar, scrape of the top verm layer, turn the jar upside down and shake the cake loose but leave it in the jar. Then I fill the jar with water and put a small ball of foil on top of the cake and replace the lid. The foil ball keeps the cake submerged. Let soak overnight (10-12 hrs.) Then rinse the cakes under running water, roll in dry verm and into the fc they go.

No problem, glad to help. Also, fyi, you don't have to dunk each cake individually like I described. Some people place all the cakes in one big bowl/pot and fill with water, and place a plate or something on top to weight them down, which may work better for you depending on how many cakes you have. Dunking each cake in its own jar works fine for me because I rarely have more than 8-10 cakes to do at once.

What temperature will be optimal? My fridge works very cool (almost below freezing) because of a broken controller.

Dunking under refridgeration is not required. It will help prevent contam problem due to bacteria but you can leave the submerged cakes out at room temperature and probably be just fine. I have always dunked at room temp and have never had a cake contam from it.

I figured in refrigerator it will serve not only as a dunk and bacteria prevention, but also as a cold shock

This is incorrect. A cold shock is a simple drop in temperature that helps to initiate fruiting in many species, and is not needed for cubensis. We put cakes in the refrigerator to halt growth to help prevent contamination during the dunk.

using a small amount of bleach in your dunk water helps too... also, you can change the water every 4 hours or something like that.  then your cakes aren't sitting in old nasty dunk water the whole time.  I usually put about 5ml of bleach per gallon used.  then when i'm ready to lay them out in the bin, I do another bleach dip of the same ratio for about 15 min.  just to be safe.. the bleach doesn't really hurt the cakes at all.  I also mist my DEC with a lightly bleached water..  In my case, there is a large amount of water sitting in the casing layer for long periods of time... watering with bleach water keeps contams at bay long enough to get thru a flush.  you may have some deformities due to the chemical interaction of myc. but not that many.  just don't over do it with the bleach.
