The inoculation holes should be on the lid. The foil is there only to cover the jar when you're pasteurizing or sterilizing it.

the pf tek for simple minds is the one i was reading so put the tin foil over the lid and the holes only when you put it in the pressure cooker and after you put the spores in you let it breath?

Foil does not prevent air flow (comes in from the sides, it dosent seal) so there is no need to put holes in it. I have never done PF but you always cover the jars with foil before PCing.

Afterward I would leave the foil on as a dustcover during incubation until its ready. You just have to remove it to inject the spores.

The less you look at them the better, patience and dicipline is key.

In that tek I believe they are using foil as the actual lids to the jar. Which will work, but if you have the lids, use them instead :P.

But that is correct. Leave the foil on until you inoculate, then toss it.

Maybe I'm missing something and just being dense,it has been a while since I tried to make cakes but if you don't remove the foil how on earth to you find the holes in the jar to inoculate through.Isn't the foil only used in the PC to keep water from getting into the jars and the verm layer of top does the protection from contamination

i use cakes just for spawning medium though.....

i make my cakes like this:

put in the brf up to the threads loosly...take tinfoil and put it in jar making it about 1/2in cup.....then put the dry vermiculite in there then the lid with 4 holes with

masking tape on them..the lid can go on a little tricky cuz of going over the foil but just make sure its not cross threaded and your cool..

im sure some will say oooo you dont get air exchange yadda yadda there in 1/2 pint jars mine take 28 days like clockwork and my contam rate is almost perfect

28 Days is way too long for a simple 1/2 pint jar. They should be done in 14 to 15 days. I would agree with those who say the foil is limiting gas exchange, and is slowing things down.
