Modems in Ubuntu.
    #6603539 - 02/23/07 07:17 PM (17 years, 1 month ago)

If you are too lazy to read the whole post, just read the bold.

I currently use a dual-paritioned hard-drive with Win XP Pro and Ubuntu.

I've had alot of experience with XP, but very little with Linux.

There's one thing that stops me from using my Ubuntu partition very often, Ubuntu hates and will not read my modem. Ubuntu forums and other resources I have went to, say if the modem manufacturers havent agreed with the idea of Linux drivers, I can't do a damn thing about it.

Does anyone here know of a method to prove them wrong?

im sorry to say that, even as an avid ubuntu supporter , i run into this problem often..Ubuntu works wonders on finding drivers for older or popular modeled laptop/desktops, but for the obscure we are left to wonder ..
sorry no solution that i have found.

It has a lot more to do with your particular model of modem than it does with your distro. Most popular modem chipsets are supported in the kernel, but if you have a winmodem (a modem that doesn't have all the hardware features of a traditional modem and relies on the cpu and drivers to run it) or an obscure brand, you might be screwed. I'd run a google search for "[model of modem] linux" and see what comes up.

or take the drivers off of the cd ( if it came with an install cd ) and just run ndiswrapper

It's a creative labs modem that came out as a Winmodem for a test of it (I found a prog that claimed to identify Winmodems).

No disc, secondhand comp... and well, thanks for the input, but I guess I really am just screwed.

ya winmodems don't work...the only way linux can read those modems is through emulation...

What is the exact model of the creative labs modem and I'll look at what I can find?

Or you can get an external modem...Those work great with any UNIX system

Just get a new modem. I am sure you could get a box of 100 for...free

The problem is with Microsoft. The only modems that I know of that don't work with linux are the cheap "WinModems" that Microshit pushes. The WinModem moves functionality from the hardware to the software. This means the hardware is cheaper to make, but the computer has to work harder to use the modem. (Not much of an issue with high speed computers... big issue when winmodems first came out... they would hang up if your load got too high.) Because Microsoft controls the software part of the technology, and because Microsoft hates competition, Microsoft keeps the information needed to write a device driver to itself. The solution is to send a box of shit (the winmodem) to Microsoft and go buy a new modem that is not a winmodem.

If Microsoft and Vista have their way, all new hardware will be restricted to working with Microsoft OS only. Companies will not be allowed to release open source drivers for there hardware, or release technical specs needed to write device drivers, if they want Microsoft Vista support. The future of trusted computing, DRM, and the Microsoft bend over and take it up the ass monopoly.
