Coco/Verm Mixture Help

Hi people, I was wondering how much calcium carbonate to add to a Coco/Verm Casing mixture. I'm thinking of doing a 50/50 mix and was wondering if i should add some and how much. Also how can i sterilize the casing mix. I'm getting a pressure cooker and thinking of doing it in that but was wondering if there were any consequences in doing it that way. For example excess moisture absorption or something? Also is a 50/50 mix a better way to go than a 60/40?

Coco/verm casing is an outdated tek. Coco coir was found to have to many nutes which leads to overlay. Most people use coco coir in their substrates now. Try a 50/50 of verm and peat moss. Some people sterilize their casing some pasteurize. I guess it depends on what works for you. Hope that helps

Would Sphagnum Moss work instead of Peat moss? Wondering cause I got some accidentally and was wondering if it'd work... so i don't have to take it back, lol.

Sphagnum moss IS peat moss. Sphagnum is actually the correct name - it's only called peat moss because it's found in peat bogs.

Wow this is intense, I am floored! 50/50 coco/verm tek is outdated? I must be out of the loop. I have been using this for the last 3-4 years. Your right too there is always an overlay prob. Im about to try the peat.
To answer the question about the Calcium just add about a cup of it all crushed up. I use a coffee grinder. However I dont think it is necessary, I used it a few times and found it just to be a pain in the ass and havent since. I havent noticed any change with or without it.

Sphagnum Moss is not peat moss and won't work as a casing material, so take it back. Here's a link that explains it further. http://www.ext.vt.edu/departments/envirohort/articles/misc/sphagnum.html The calcium carbonate is used to raise the pH. I prefer hydrated lime because it goes to work right away when you need it. We don't lime for the mushroom mycelium, because it actually prefers a slightly acid pH. We lime because contaminant molds require a low ph, so by making it 7 or above, the casing layer favors mushroom mycelium over molds. I'd suggest a teaspoon of hydrated lime per cup of peat. That will get you into the ballpark without danger of making the casing too sweet. RR

Thanks Guys. RogerRabbit was Right i was talking about the decorative moss not the dirt-like peat moss. I've been reading about the sphagnum decorative moss and figured that people were going to say to get rid of the stuff. I have another question though. Some people add gypsum to there jars when incubating and to there terrariums. Is the gypsum to also raise PH or is it to prevent contaminations.... or both lol? Oh yea... I'm getting coco coir shipped to me because i was late on cancellation... can i use it in some other way? I've heard people using it as in there substrate mixes.

if you do use a Verm/Coco Coir Casing mixture...
use 60/40 Verm and Coco Coir or...
70/30 Verm and Coco Coir.
the more Verm the better when using Coir as casing layer material.
