Sterilizing the Martha
    #6504468 - 01/28/07 09:29 AM (17 years, 2 months ago)

Just got the greenhouse structure itself assembled. Gonna get the rest of the supplies for inoculation this week. Just curious the best/easiest way to sterilize the inside of the greenhouse itself. Just spray it down with Lysol I guess and wipe? Spray generously and make sure every inch gets its share? Then let air out with flap open (plastic front door flap to Martha)? Thanks in advance.

A martha and a greenhouse are two different things. Anyway, you can't sterilize the greenhouse, but you can sanitize it. Just wipe the walls and shelves with a 1:10 bleach:water solution. Lysol will cause mutation. Don't use it anywhere near your mushrooms.

I usually do monthly or so cleanings and spray tons of Clorox or similar all over the side and basically fog the whole inside then zip it shut and come back and wipe out the insides 5 mins later or so.  One time I read the side of a Clorox Spray can and it mentioned it needed up to 2 minutes to kill certain things effectively so make sure to leave it on long enough.

I also have a drip tray with perlite underneath mine and I add some hydrogen peroxide to it to keep it on the clean side

BTW - I didn't even clean my greenhouses when they came in new.  And had no contam problems but it is probably a good idea to clean them

If you have a bad trich outbreak, then spray it down between crop cycles to kill the spores that will be all over the inside surfaces. However, there is no need or reason to worry about sterilizing or sanitizing a new unit. The time for sterility is in your inoculation procedures, not fruiting. Air exchange is the key to contamination prevention in a fruiting chamber, and air isn't sterile by any means.

Aside from the genetic mutation deal, spraying Lysol on the greenhouse's plastic is probably a BAD idea. Anyone who's ever sprayed it on acrylic knows that Lysol will happily eat away at it.... it's likely to do the same with your GH plastic.

After a run , I spray mine with Mean Green spray cleaner . Then I drown it with Lysol . Wipe that up and last spray it with 70% alcohol and wipe it down and load it up .

Might seem like overkill , but it works great for me . The last thing I want is to lose 100+ pounds of colonized poo because of a dirty GH .

Heh - that's slightly ironic. Mean Green to prevent the mean green. I imagine it works, though!
