Coast Guard announces $57M cocaine seizure
January 24, 2007 - nbc-2.com
 The Coast Guard announced the seizure of an estimated $57 million from a fishing vessel in the Caribbean last month.
Officials say the Coast Guard Cutter Bear picked the boat up on radar on December 19th.
A boarding crew conducted an extensive search of the vessel for 16 hours. They found 1,800 pounds of cocaine hidden beneath concrete in the boat's fish hold.
The crew of the vessel was detained pending the outcome of diplomatic discussions on where they might be prosecuted.

Not to be too cynical, but I've always wondered how many of these huge drug seizures in the news are fabricated by the Coast Guard. Those could be bales of anything...

I doubt it's a lie. If you're transporting all of that cocaine, chances are you've done it before, and there are plenty of other people doing it as well. Some of them are bound to get caught. Even if it is a fake, I'm sure the Coast Guard has access to a huge amount of previously seized coke, so those are still probably bricks of the real stuff. Finally, it's always possible that they add to what the find to make the bust seem bigger for various reasons. But that's stepping into conspiracy theory stuff, which I usually try and avoid.

uh, pure cocaine sells for a fuckload more than $70/g on the street. Most street coke is 35% and thats considered "fire"

The war isen't on drugs... the war is on the causes that influence people to abuse drugs. drug-abuse is a by-product of the system and much like radioactive waste occurs from utilizing nuclear power, drug addicts with drug-problems will need to be properly disposed of, like the decaying radioactive waste produced from nuclear energy. -i2ancid

You're getting ripped off then. If you're paying more than $50/g you're getting ripped bad. And that's at the gram level! $70/g would be a $245 eight ball! An eight ball should be about $100 if you're well connected, $150 tops.
You're also way off on the purity. Average cocaine purity is around 60-65%. If you're getting less than 45-50% pure then you're getting screwed.

Not around here. I can find cocaine for around $20/g. Around half the time it is cut and half the time it is pure. Of course, I am not very far from the source, which helps a lot. (The pure stuff comes in compressed "rocks" (not crack) that have a mother-of-perl/oil-on-water looking texture.) Personally, I find it to be a horrid drug that I avoid like the plague. However, I wouldn't let my dislike of the substance prevent others from doing to their body as they wish.
