COIR+Straw+Verm for bulk substrate?
    #6487729 - 01/22/07 10:37 PM (17 years, 2 months ago)

Looks like my friend can't get his hands on decent store-bought poo right now. So how about a mixture of straw, COIR, and vermiculite?

He will use the oven-bag pasteurization method...

Any recommendations of what percentage of straw/COIR/verm should be used and if anything else should be added?

Thanks all,

-n

Why not just add some coffee grounds to the coir and use it by itself

Thanks for the tip, but my friend is not quite up for the coffee grounds process just yet. But will give it a go sometime after he gets this grow off the ground.

As for my previous question....should he just mess around with the mixture as long as he makes sure its fluffy enough for the mycellium to colonize rapidly? I was thinking maybe a 25% verm + 45% straw + 30% COIR in an oven bag would do for the oven pasteurization...opinions?

Lastly, its his first time using coir... how long should he let it soak before use, and should he let it dry out a bit before mixing with everything else?

One gallon of water will bring one whole brick of coir to filed capacity. (edit: about a half hour soak depends on how much you break the brick up)
I'd try to cut the straw down to the same size of the verm.
Mix the straw 50/50 with the verm, and hydrate that.
Then mix the coir (and coffee) 50/50 with the straw/verm.
Then add your Ph and Nitrogen shit.
That should give you a good amount of substrate if you use the entire brick of coir.
If you don't use all the coir just tie the unused stuff up in a trash bag.

Of course it's all just experimentation.
You'll get results no matter what.

"Then add your Ph and Nitrogen shit." Where do you get materials for this, and must one need to also buy something to measure the Ph -- Walmart? What if coffee grounds are not an option....are adding these things necessary when using coir?

Not necessary, but recommended.
You can buy Ph test strips at pet stores along with oyster shells.
Hydrated lime you can use for Ph also. Try a garden center.
Coffee adds Nitrogen. You can also use blood meal, kelp meal, worm castings, I think gypsum helps. You can find that stuff at garden centers too.
