Yet Another Hotplate Question
    #6484848 - 01/22/07 07:25 AM (17 years, 1 month ago)

I've read many of the hotplate threads, and I know most work for PC's.  I was wondering if the one that I am looking at on ebay would work.  It is a laboratory hotplate, and I am unsure if it is capable of supporting the PC.  The hotplate is located  here.  The PC of choice will be an All American Pressure Cooker Model 910.  What are your thoughts about this item?  I know there are some issues with ceramic surfaces and heating a PC, so I thought I would ask before spending $60.

Thanks in advance,

Klassasin

That one would probably work.  Since you're not dealing with corrosive chemicals, though, you don't really NEED a ceramic burner.

This would do much better for you...  double the wattage, half the price.

yes the second link reccomended is a much much much smarter choice.

cheaper, double the power.  i might even consider something like that but a little bigger.

the hotplate in the original post is 3 3/4" in diameter.  lets think about that for a second... placing a 13" diameter AA910 on it... don't think so

its designed for careful and accurate heating of beakers/flasks etc.  not for cooking meals or running a pressure cooker.

In addition, it's only 500 wattts. Not suitable. Look in your local area for a used restaurant equipment supply and try to find a commercial hot plate.

AA 910 INSIDE an AA 941.

You want the AA 921, minimum.

An AA 910 is good for a few 1/2 pints, syringes & scalpels.
NOT QUART jars.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=2625289
This one holds 7 quart jars & is a good starter PC.

EDIT TO ADD:
http://housewares.hardwarestore.com/38-191-range-top-burners/deluxe-electric-range-top-burner-604965.aspx
Read the wattage on an 8 inch stove top element.
You want one 1000 or 1200 watt minimum..
For that, you almost have to get one from a restaurant supply house.

Or, equivalent off ebay.

Found this with some Google searching.....

I bought a 1000watt hotplate from Wal-Mart, for my AA921.. it just doesn't do the job. It'll get up to 15psi, about 90-120minutes after you start it.. pretty crappy :frown:

You'll want to go higher than 1000 on the wattage if you get a larger PC than the 910.

For me, it's kinda funny that the walmart closest to me does not carry anything above 10qts in the realm of pressure cookers.

@agar: Sadly, that walmart PC isn't even available to me (and I live in the biggest city in my state). Also, with the AA Mdl 910, how many quart jars can it hold? I'm not planning on going big (anytime soon). So, I am just wondering what you think its average capacity is--I'm thinking around 4.

@Sillicybin: I assume than that it would be able to carry enough weight? That is the only thing that I am unsure of. Thanks for the link by the way.

All in all, I thank everyone for their contributions. I'm still learning the ropes to this interesting hobby, and I give my gratitude to the ones who spread their abundant knowledge.

I can't say that I have personal experience with that, unfortunately. Looking at it, I'd say it could hold up a 910, but couldn't really tell you for sure.

hey agar I fit 10 quarts in my 921aa. 7 on the bottom and 3 on there sides. I do not use polyfil lids and cover all the tops with foil. works just fine. 921AA minimum. I wish I had a 941 sterilizer...soon...
