It is hard as hell. I had a guitar at 11 and my biggest regret was not taking it seriously. I sold it to buy some stupid shit i cant even remember what it was.

Just keep playing. You will notice yourself getting better every week. Once you nail down the major chords you will have an explosion of learning.

ive been playing guitar passionately since i was 14. its an integral part of my life, and looking back my highschool years revolved around jamming with friends, skipping school to jam wiht a band, or just toking and playing on the sofa. ive met some great people and had the best memories with my guitar!!

so yeah, dont worry about it being hard. once you get the basics, u can play the shit out of the thing doing improv or whatever ur into. dont give up, just love it!

Keep at it, the guitar is a very fun instrument.

At first it can be quite hard, trying to play chords at first was really hard for me, my hands are small and it hurt to play chords.

But now I've been playing for about 4 years and i can do all sorts of stuff on the guitar, creating your own songs is very fun and so is jamming with other musicians.

All it takes is just some practice and you'll be playing all your favorite songs in no time.

I hope you have a good time with learning and playing the guitar.

ive been playign for 3-4 years now and i'd say i'm getting a good hang of the instrument, and jerry garcias true talent will only show itself more and more as you keep learning... i've given up on trying to play like him a while ago, don't think anyone can play like him for that matter.

but yeah keep playing, its really hard to get started, but this is a really good site, start from lesson 1 and actually do what it sais and you'll actually LEARN what your playing, not just play it.

Hell yeah. I'm getting a guitar soon as well. I'm 21 and have never touched a guitar for longer than a few hours but hey. I'm only 21.

ive been playing for a couple years, but all i know are covers. Ive never really focused on making my own stuff because when i try i never like the way it sounds.
This is one thing i MUST work on.
that and soloing.
This is MY resolution.

but youre totally right. My best friends dad at age 45 decided to learn the guitar. Im helping him along, and it's an AWEOSME sight. He keeps getting better.

starting bass was the best thing i ever did
its true learning is an exponential thing. it starts pretty slow. but once you learn a few patterns and start seeing how they all link together it alll starts too seep into you

I like the way NAP puts it, it certainly does seep into you  I have been playing for about 5 years now, and I am actually getting pretty good.

It gets easier with time, but the first couple of years can be tough, thats when most people quit. I dont meet allot of people that play for 7 years and then just say med, it was alright but whatever I quit.

Personally I am starting to hear the music in everything, like everyday sounds I hear now sometimes remind me of something I have played, or would like to play.

Not only that, I can HEAR music in my HEAD  I can hear things I want to make, and its easier to learn other peoples stuff now as well.

But 99% of what I do is just write my own stuff. I have actually just gotten over a lazy, confusing slump and I am jamming again. Cant wait to do some more recording.

i always struggle with writing my own stuff. I listen to music constantly throughout the day, pretty much. And, i feel like it's destroying my ability to be original. Every time i think of something it runs into a known melody. lol
i gotta putdown the mp3 player...

By a couple of years I assume you mean 2??(I would assume thats what you mean)

I avoided learning other peoples stuff for years, simply because of what you are talking about, I feared that if I used to many tabs, and learned others music too much that I wouldn't develop my OWN SOUND enough. Weather that was true or not, I am not sure. But I DOD avoid allot of tab, and I HAVE developed my own sound.

But as far as listening, IMHO, how can you avoid listening to other peoples music, seems like a hard task to me, I love to write, but I need to listen to music everyday. After a few more years of playing I think you will find your own sound  but if you feel you need to play more, and listen less then do it.

You will be a better guitar player the more you practice.
Learn allot of scales, and you will realize, sometimes things are going to sound a little similar as there are only so many notes on the guitar, but dont stop playing something the moment you notice similarity IMO, run with it, and if it sucks, and you don't want to play it, ditch it, but give your creations a chance.

What hurts me more then anything, is when I play a certain rift or set of chords, then get lazy for a few weeks, and forget how to play it :frown: and if I didn't record it, thats it, its gone forever. I have a few rifts that I am actually quite upset about to this day, because they have slipped through my fingers and are now lost forever. :frown:

PLAY, PLAY, PLAY
