Polite way to say you don't watch crappy TV/movies?

How do you tell people that you don't want to watch the latest reality TV show or crappy DVD they just rented without coming off like a total snob?
I turned off the TV an hour ago because there wasn't shit on and my sister keeps trying to be helpful by suggesting all this crap she has on her DVR. I hate most mainstream movies these days, a lot of them make me feel retarded for even watching them.
Anyone else have to deal with this from family, friends, co-workers? I really don't want to be rude to people, but I'd rather gouge my eyes out with chopsticks than sit through an episode of American Idol.

Fuck being polite. I always tell people my opinion of the shit they watch on TV. Personally, if you think American Idol is worthwhile programming then I couldn't give a damn if you get offended!

If they really do like those shitty reality shows, chances are you can get away with insulting them in an intelligent manner because their brain has rotted away to the point where they won't understand subtlety. And yeah, fuck being polite.

Tell them you'd rather watch the History Channel. If they say 'no', you can be like "NOW YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL BIACH!"

There's nothing wrong with just flat out saying "I don't watch tv" thats it, its not rude, thats what I tell people, all the time.
As for your sister, just be like, yeah I have things to do (insert activity here), so I don't have time to watch a movie, but thanks.

Yeah, i'd have to agree the the modern mainstream movies/tv have definitely been disappointing. I love my discovery channels, but even that is a fucking repeat marathon. Get winamp pro, it's worth the 14 bucks I paid for it (once, four years ago, and still can update it normally). It's got some nice streaming internet "tv stations", and I can always find something I'd rather watch on there.

reality show? what exactly does any of those shows actualy have to do with reality, I mean look at survivor, for reality, you drop 20 people on an island with no food, no weapons no supplies except a few days worth of water, whom ever lives through the experience earns the million bucks, being voted off an island isnt survival, it's popularity, the show should have been set in a highschool

Hell yeah, now that's what I have been saying for a long time. In fact, I'd be more likely to watch survivor if the show was more along those guidelines. Survival of the fittest/most intelligent baby!!!

i agree with the first couple people... im always straight up i either say "what the fuck are we watching" or "change this shit" lol cuz they know what theyre watching is stupid and there is probably something better on.... if theres nothing good on ill just put it on the food channel...

That's my favorite suggestion so far - I may try that next time.
And, yeah, I'd normally be rude and say "I don't watch that shit", but there are some situations where I need to be more polite about it. I do watch a lot of TV (sports, mostly), so nobody would believe me if I told them I just didn't watch TV.
I just think it's kinda sad when someone sees you reading a book & listening to music and they suggest you should watch all this crap. Maybe I was just bored of TV and felt like turning it off for awhile.
Good to see I'm not the only one who can't stomach mainstream entertainment these days.

I don't see anything wrong with being honest.
Tell them you don't like it. If they ask why, then you should be happy to oblige them with an explanation.

I agree with most of the posts. Why do something if you can't be upfront about it. Okay... I see some things you might want to keep private. I mean you might not want to tell your mom about your chronic masturbation habits and whatnot. But not watching TV... nothing to be ashamed of and honesty always has its place.

I like taking the, "I don't watch that crap" or the, "Kill your TV" view. But then i find myself watching some telly before i close my peepers, normaly Adult Swim, or something about Nature or education of some sort. Crazy how i watch the two extremes.
