WBS REFUSING to colonize 100%

My WBS jars have been at like 98% colonization for days now. Should I shake them to redistribute the grain, or what? They've been in the incubator with my rye jars and the rye jars are doing great.

Have patience. To much shaking. Can reverse progress.

Thanks, agar. I've never been very good at patience.

fuck patience, it usually never gets anything done
you never want to shake a jar if its over 50% colonized I do it at about 25-30 %
BUT 98% should be enough colonization to move on to the next phase lol its prob ready

I've had jars stall with very little left to do also... as long as it's not obviously infected with bacteria, I'll just pop the colonized mycelium out and separate out and throw away the uncolonized portion.
EDIT: The reason my jars stalled was because some of the grains were just way too dry.

They don't 'stall' without a reason. Either it ran out of air due to no holes for gas exchange, or it's contaminated with bacteria. You can't spawn uncolonized grains or the bulk is sure to contaminate.
If you're using quart/liter jars, they shouldn't be in an incubator. High temps stimulate bacteria, so let them colonize at normal room temperature. (72-74) Anything 80F or less will be fine. RR

I could have made the exact same post except for the opposite reason, thats why I hardly use birdseed anymore,I have tried like 4 different wbs teks and no matter what there is always a good half inch at the bottom that is too wet to colonize,Just use the colonized portion and make sure not to use the seeds that are not covered in mycelium

I have the exact same problem man I really just don't know what I was doing wrong, each consecutive time I tried to use less moisture content, tried my hardest to get it even below field capacity. None the less I had the same result every single time. The bottom of the jar filled with fluid unable to colonize and eventually starting contam. of some kind.

Yea,I cant figure it out,I have used longer soaks and shorter soaks, longer simmer and shorter simmer, every time its the same thing,I'm just not meant to use wbs I guess

What happens if you do shake after 50%? Just curious as I had been considering this and was wondering what disaster could've happened.

It doesn't matter no matter how hard you shake...even if you bang the jar against something it wont break up,its a solid mass of mushy crap at the bottom of the jar

Nope, just a bunch of busted starchy mush that the mycelium cant get through, the colonized parts have always spawned to my substrate just fine so I don't think its bacteria, more of an issue of me making some mistake along the line during preparation

You could try no simmer. The jars AFOAF had success with had minimall prepared WBS, which was only rinsed and floaters removed. Then it went in jars with water, so the water line was 2/3 as high as the WBS. Cooked for 1:30 at 15PSI. Don't see a single busted kernel, and the water content is perfect. Good luck!

Maybe I will try no simmer with wbs when I run out of rye,I would love to get good at birdseed considering its like a third of the price I pay for my rye and I can get it at the pet store,I have to special order my rye and wait for it to come in...its a pain but it beats jars full of birdseed that wont colonize,Ill get it right one of these days
