Woman Pleads Guilty in Breast-Milk Death of Daughter

A woman accused of causing the death of her infant daughter by feeding her breast milk containing cocaine has pleaded guilty to attempted manslaughter.
Sara Shelby of West Branch stopped short of admitting Thursday that she killed her five-month-old daughter with breast milk contaminated by the drug. Karie Bowman died August 21st, 2005, and a medical examiner ruled the infant died of cocaine intoxication.
Shelby faces up to five years in prison when sentenced next month.
She had been originally been charged with involuntary manslaughter, a 15-year felony. But she agreed to a plea deal in which she also agreed to terminate her parental rights to her other child, a five-year-old girl.

i'd hazard to guess there were no motives either; one more horrible murder of the innocent.
- I dont understand the plea bargain she was offered, Shouldnt the state have taken her child as soon as she was incarcerated ?

Yeah, 5 years doesn't seem like nearly enough.
It's really sad that this type of shit happens as often as it does. I guess some bitches just haven't heard of adoption or something.

This is a case where a drug user should be punished... no question about it, she killed that kid.

It does matter whether it was intentional or accidental
Just think about it
But even if it was accidental, she should still be punished, but her real punishment was losing the won she loved
If she killed it on purpose, then she needs to serve time to be punished

If it was accidental, then it still was criminal negligence. It is this type of uninformed, ignorant drug useage that serves as justification for those directly involved in the War On Drugs. Clearly, law enforcement officials deal with some fucked up characters who happen to have drugs or have taken drugs. The cool people who take drugs and are responsible never register on their scale.
This woman does deserve some time in jail. If it was an intentional act, then she deserves more time served - the justice system is based upon intent. Lack of intent can be a crime when one is responsible for another.

It's highly doubtful that the amount of cocaine in her milk would be enough to kill a baby.
I take this article to mean that she did it intentionally and actually put cocaine into the milk.

A woman accused of causing her infant daughter’s death by feeding her breast milk tainted with cocaine was sentenced Wednesday to nine months behind bars on a reduced charge.
Sara Shelby pleaded guilty last month to a charge of attempted manslaughter in the Aug. 21, 2005, death of 5-month-old Karie Lee Bowman.
She originally was charged with involuntary manslaughter, a felony that could have meant 15 years in prison, but she agreed to a plea deal in which she would terminate her parental rights to her other child, a 5-year-old girl.
Police said Shelby, 24, of West Branch, told them she had used cocaine two or three times the day before her daughter’s death.
A medical examiner ruled that the girl died of cocaine intoxication.
