TIT Heater Broken?
    #6445338 - 01/10/07 01:34 PM (17 years, 2 months ago)

I'm trying to figure out if the water heater in my TIT incubator is broken.

I noticed that the thermometer wasn't reading the same as what the heater was set at (heater set at 82 degrees, thermometer reads good amount lower). I then turned up the water heater to 86 degrees. I have one of those electronic thermometers in the inner tub (tub holding jars), and it reads 74 degrees now. This doesn't seem right, 12 degree difference.

The thermometer is made up of a simple sensor that transfers info via electrical wire to the digital display (outside of tub). I noticed that on the digital display there is a switch that reads in and out. I assume that "in" stands for the side of the thermometer that sticks to the wall or surface inside the tub, and "out" stands for the air that its in contact with inside the tub (the surface that isn't touching anything). Is this correct?

On a side note, when I reach into the lower tub (tub containing water and heater) and touch the heater to seeing if its doing anything it immediately lights up and starts heating again. Does this sound like a broken heater?

"IN" is the temperature of the air around the display part of the thermometer (it is the room temperature...it is probably 74 degrees in your house)

"OUT" is the sensor itself (the one inside the tub)

If you made an adjustment to the temperature while the switch was in the "IN" position you may be overheating your jars.

If the water inside the tub feels warm to you it is probably bordering on too warm for your jars. IMO, 84 F is just right.

I guess that makes sense because when set on "In" it reads about 8 to 10 degrees lower than when set on "Out".

How did you know that? My digital thermometer didn't come with a manual.

Just an educated guess.

Thats interesting, my guess would be the other way around.

"In" meaning inside the tub (Where the sensor is)
"Out" meaning outside the tub (Where the display is)

However, I suppose there are no thermometers made specifically for TIT incubators. So I would guess (If you are correct)this one was made to have the sensor outside of your house, and have the display inside your house. Which would make sense by your guess.

"In" meaning inside your house (Where the display is)
"Out" meaning outside of your house (Where the sensor is)

There is only one thing bothering me. I think this type of digital thermometer was made for Terrariums for lizards and other cold blooded animals. So I don't know why they would apply these meanings to "In" and "Out".
"In" meaning outside the terrarium (Where the display is)
"Out" meaning inside the terrarium (Where the sensor is)
Just seems backwards, right?

I'm sorry if anyone is getting confused with the constant changing of definitions of "In" and "Out", but I found myself getting confused over which definitions were being referred to when they were not defined afterwards. (Reading that sentence back to myself I find even that is confusing, perhaps I'm just easily confused  :bongroll: )

Could someone shed some light on this subject.

The thermometer you are using is just like the one I have. It is set up for being placed on a windowsill inside your house. And the wire sensor to be placed outside your house. So you can see the indoor temperature inside your house (the IN setting- the sensor on the unit itself) and the temperature outside your house (the OUT setting- the sensor on the wire) THAT is what its 'intended' for. I can see where your confusion comes from. I hope this clears things up

do you use a pump to circulate the water? If your house stays at about 70-75 degrees for room temp, they would colonize faster if you did away with that incubator. just my advice.
