Warning about Myco Supply pelletized horse manure
    #6434299 - 01/07/07 10:45 AM (17 years, 2 months ago)

Hey everyone. A few weeks ago I decided to try Myco Supply's pelletized horse manure. Although the quality of Tenn Stud's manure has always been top notch, I got a little sick of spending hours breaking up clumps of horse manure by hand (I was starting to feel like a farm hand!). Anyways, I am extremely disappointed with the quality of Myco Supply's product. For one thing, the manure absolutely reeks...now Tenn Stud's product smells earthy, as it should, but the smell of this manure is on a whole other level. I cannot emphasize enough how much the pelletized manure stinks. Another problem is that it's very difficult to rehydrate Myco Supply's product - it doesn't seem to absorb water as well as Tenn Stud's manure. The end result is that the manure is too dry and doesn't colonize properly. Last but not least is the problem of cost - I normally use approximately 2.5 pounds of Tenn Stud's manure per bin; to achieve the same volume with Myco Supply's manure I had to use 10 pounds per bin, a significant difference.

I know I'm coming down hard on Myco Supply, but I don't want other forum members to make the same mistake I did. Although I'm disappointed with this particular product, I must say that overall I've been very satisfied with Myco Supply's products and customer service.

Thats too bad, I thought his pelletized product seemed very cool. I even thought about buying a pelletizer to make the same product.

Sadly, this particular product has NOT received good reviews.

How to re hydrate
Simply mix the dehydrated manure with water until you reach a paste-like consistency
Pasteurize
Finally mix with spawn, then case!

A hint =

"paste-like consistency" would ring a warning bell to me.

Not to mention:
Folks should learn to use the SEARCH function.
Before buying a product.

1 example found by using the SEARCH FUNCTION.

This by no means is meant to slam MYCO SUPPLY.
I have purchased many of their products.
No complaints from me.
Kudo's in fact.

I did not try their dehydrated pellet product.
As, I have had experience with other poo pellet products.

All of which, after hydration, were rank.
The ones I tried, all appeared to be.
Made from raw steer feed lot / slaughter house manure.
Which is rank.
Lot of sludge & fecal odor. :puke:

Thanks for the post agar. You're right about one thing...I should have searched the forums more extensively before purchasing the manure. I did run a quick search before placing my order but I didn't come up with much. In the end, being sick and tired up breaking up clumps of manure by hand, I decided to take a chance with Mycosupply's product. Luckily, I didn't purchase a large quantity so I didn't piss away much $$$.

Oh well, back to breaking up manure!

Why are you spending hours breaking up manure?

I don't grasp.

Fill a 5 gallon bucket half or 2/3rds full of dry nuggets & muffins.

Add enough warm water to almost fill the bucket.

Take a stick, garden hoe, or something to stir & mash with.

Stir, mash, stir, swirl, twist & mash.

Drain off the water.

Scoop out & tear any remaining clumps.

Squeeze test as you go.

Bag up & pasteurize.

If you are don't like the HANDS on approach.

Go to your local paint store.

Buy a long shaft paint mixer blade.

Use an electric drill to spin it.
Get with it.

Hi firsttimer101,
I'm sorry you had a bad experience with our dehydrated manure.

Sadly, we literally sell tons of our manures to edible farms all over the tri-state area.  Most of the people who have used our manure and have problems with it, for some reason, don't use it properly.

Due to the large amounts that we've sold as well as the positive responses that we've gotten from the product (some always remember the "bad" responses), I would be happy to help you work with it and give you a few tips privately.  Due to the nature of this board I don't recommend posting personal information about your grow, PM is best.)

Feel free to PM me and I'd be happy to give you a hand

firsttimer101 you're definitely doing something wrong.
Although I totally agree with you about the smell, Myco Supply's manure pellets have always gave me great results.

Heres my cats current project:

Puerto Ricans on coco coir and Myco Supply manure

You apparently are not mixing it well enough.

My procedure:
-mix water little by little into the manure until you get a dirt like consistency

-take the same amount of vermiculite(I usually eye it out) and mix with the manure

-lastly take some coco coir and soak it for a few minutes in water then break it up into the manure/verm. I find the coir helps the substrate get more fluffier.

I don't understand about the smell your referring to. The smell is such an earthly smell and no stench of rotting manure.

I hope this helps.

-PEACE
