yea, iv seen vegetable oil mentioned from time to time. iv never used it myself but i'll certainly use it when making my new compost pile. i'd like to see the comparison of a normal hpoo casing with one containing v-oil. i might try it out when my SA spawn is ready.

The cottonseed oil & meal seem pretty interesting.

I've been searching for like a half hour, and I'm having trouble finding it in any retail store all I can find is wholesale.

Any suggestions?

Edit:
This is as close as I could get:

hard to say since that wasn't cubes. Though it's def worth some experimentation. I know i have heard about use of oils mentioned in the past.

I do it & have for a few years.

I use it making compost.
Plus, add a couple shot glass's full.
To h/poo, just before I pasteurize it.
So, 2 oz's, to 5 to 8 lbs of hydrated h/poo.

Once mixed in well, you cannot tell it's even there.

I think a lot of people are going to start doing this now. Everyone has vegetable oil sitting around.

Yeah I've read about V-Oil in a few posts. I know agar uses it in his compost from a post he had on quick composting in barrels or something. I've read a few people use it in casings. I'm sure vegetable oil makes a very fine casing additive. And I'm sure someone will experiment with it (I'm sure WHO will too.). However, I'm kinda more interested in the more exotic oils mentioned in the article. Maybe he'll experiment with those too.

Does it only work with compost and hpoo or could I add some V-oil to coir and get similar results?

It should work with coir, like any other high fiber substrate.
Just don't go overkill with it.

Well actually that brings up a good question.

Should it be supplemented at spawning or casing or both?

Guess thats just another factor for experimentation. The article seems to show about the same values for both.

How much is too much? Could or should oil be used in both the spawn and casing?

I know if I had the resources I would be playing around with the idea.

If you have dry compost or h/poo.

You mix it in, when you hydrate the dry substrate.
Then, pasteurize the substrate.
(cool to room temps)
Then add spawn.

I see no way to add it, when you add a casing cover mixture.
The substrate is already colonized.

is crisco vegetable oil ok?

also, at the health food store i saw quinoa oil and flax seed oil, and some other grain based oils i'm now forgetting the names of. does anyone think these would be better than just plain v-oil?

Lol wow they had a perfect way of cultivating these back in 1967.... Why wasnt this article just considered like the bible hahah.  Seriously though thats some sick data.  Which ever mycologist did this in 1967 is a genius   Once he discovered this there was almost no reason to try anything else..... his method looks about perfect.  Agar u continue to amaze me with your finds .
