Township supervisor charged with operating meth lab December 23, 2006 - detnews.com Associated Press
WAYLAND TOWNSHIP -- A local government official and his wife were charged Friday with operating and maintaining a methamphetamine laboratory in their home.
Supervisor Randy Marklevitz of Allegan County's Wayland Township and his wife Theresa were charged following an Oct. 4 raid on their home 20 miles south of Grand Rapids.
"He got the building and the chemicals, and he knowingly had a meth lab," Allegan County Prosecutor Fred Anderson told The Grand Rapids Press for a Friday story.
Randy Marklevitz, 50, turned himself in on Wednesday. He was released on a personal recognizance bond after being arraigned on two counts of operating and maintaining a meth lab and one count of possession.
Theresa Marklevitz, 48, was also charged with delivering or manufacturing the addictive stimulant.
In a search of the couple's home, police said they found chemicals and equipment used "to create more" of the drug than is typically considered for personal use, Lt. Michael Anderson said.
"Some of the stuff we seized was fairly sophisticated for Allegan County," he said. "We're used to seeing it cooked in rural areas and campers, but this is unusual in that it is a nice area."
Trustee Pat Staley said the township board might ask Marklevitz to step down temporarily. She described Marklevitz as "very personable and a very good supervisor."
A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 3.

Friday, April 06, 2007 Former Wayland official sentenced to 30 days in jail Meth possession lands former supervisor in Allegan County jail. --- By Bryce Hoekenga Special to the Gazette
Former Wayland Township supervisor Randy Marklevitz was sentenced Friday to 30 days in jail for methamphetamine possession.
State and county drug enforcement officers found a meth-making lab in Marklevitz’s 131st Avenue home and seized 3.4 grams of the drug on Oct. 14, authorities said. Marklevitz, 50, pleaded guilty March 2 to the possession of methamphetamine and was facing up to 10 years in prison and $15,000 in fines.
Marklevitz received credit toward his jail term for one day already served. He was also placed on probation for two years and ordered to pay $2,580 in fines and court costs.
Allegan County Prosecutor Frederick Anderson said he was satisfied with the sentence. “It’s consistent with the sentences received by other defendants convicted of the possession of methamphetamine,” he said.
