plates... good luck, try thumbing through your phone book for a medical, vetrinary, or scientific supply outlet. maybe even a well stocked hydro store or farm supply, as they're sometimes used for agricultural purposes. another idea yet is to e-mail or call around science departments at local colleges, you may run into somebody nice enough to just give you some, sell you some, or at least point you in the direction of their source. tell 'em your kid is working on a science fair project in school. a bit of legwork there but those are your choices if you absolutely must get 'em local.
agar is easy, they'll have food grade agar (which works fine) at health food stores or even a well stocked supermarket, its a vegan alternative to gelatin. i've always heard lab grade is your better choice but never fully understood why... agar is agar for the most part and either kind absolutely works. (i'd suspect the lab grade to be more pure and perhaps finer/more uniformly ground so that it mixes with a perfect consistency... its also more expensive.)
if you come up with the agar and not plates, get creative, widemouth quarter-pint jars can serve as plates of sorts - drawback being that they give you less than optimal viewing of your culture since you'll have a lid on top (though some clever use of cling wrap might solve that for you too.)

you can get plastic round containers at wal-mart for cheap. They are about 1.5 inches thick and 3 inches in diameter. They are in the hobby section for storing needles and stuff. Check it out.

Sporeworks does have an actual store. They recently moved to a larger building and are not offically open but you can visit and shop during normal business hours. It might pay to phone first though to be sure they have the time to give you some attention.
