gill color is little off, had to use flash.

Darkness was upon us.

but it was a 70 degree day with wet grounds.

seen many flushes, they seemed to say "Look at my beautiful yellow/orange color" this is just one of many flushes seen.

If not gym.spectabilis, does someone know what they could be??
never seen them before, and i hike the area alot.

They stick out with this glowing colors never seen.Quite beautiful.

If more pictures would help that i can do.got some more close ups.

will use new 7.1 camera next time.

Peace

Hmmmm...... Not jack-o-lanterns- spore colour is off. Gymnopilus seems a little off too. I know it is unlikely given the substrate, but I'm thinking maaaaybe Cortinarius.

Kind of a tough call for me. I would feel a lot better having them in hand before throwing out guesses. Are you 100% about the blue/green thing? Was it more visible on the pins?

Some do not look like Gyms to me, yet others do somewhat. The thing is, the gyms I've found have been growing straight out of fallen trees... I know some species have been found on the ground near woody debris, at the base of trees etc.

If you take a very tiny piece smaller than a fingernail and taste it, spitting out after having it in there for a couple seconds, is it very bitter? If you try the taste test, make sure you swallow nothing! Even wash your mouth out afterwards if necessary. Pretty much all of the gyms I've ever found have had a very distinct bitter/strong taste to them.

deffinatley not jack-o-lanterns, and i can see why you would look in the direction of Cortinarius. from the bad pictures of gills maybe.
color is off.

next pictures will be better.(next flush)

I checked them out and they are just so different from Cortinarius.

Somone must be a gym expert here.

thanx for help

Beat my reply Eris lol,

Yes the pins and aborts are much more blue and have the most,

This was all one flush except the last picture in the first post.

The big flush was right at base almost connected/attached underground to the tree it seemed. all the mushrooms came from one big brick of fungus material.

other flushes seen were growing from dead debree and other similar spots as this.

The smell was very bitter, and the older bigger ones had greenish tint on stems. A few spots on stem and and cap were greenish/blue but not many.

some pins were solid blue.

They are now probably almost dry, will the taste test still work dry???

Thank you for replies.

I would do the taste test with a fresh specimen for sure!  Dried mushrooms all taste bitter to me.  :lipsrsealed:

Yes, if they are Gymnopilus spectabilis they will taste bitter after they have been dried.
They should also taste spicy and a little soapy, the flavor is very similar to  Wild ginger and  Spice bush.
 Couldn't think of anything more common to describe the taste.

The smell should be spicy also, more so when they are drying, somewhat like
anise or basil or licorice.

Be aware though, as CureCat pointed out, that the way things taste can vary from one person to the next.

Those do not look like the Gymnopilus spectabilis I find, though I suspect they might be some other species of Gymnopilus.

Notice the cap color on the pins. G. spectabilis specimens start off bright yellow and darken to orange as they mature. The one small specimen I see in your photos appears to have a dark colored cap. I also do not see any bluing in your photos, and as others have mentioned, the gill color is too light. G. spectabilis has dark orange gills at maturity. Another factor pointing to a negative ID is the irregular cap margins. Though cap shape is highly variable in all mushrooms, G. spectabilis will generally have uniformly round caps.

Look at these pictures of G. spectabilis.

Your mushrooms are something different.

thx for your reply Dan,

Pins were blue just like your photo, and gills are a diff color then my pictures show (bad lightning) Very rusty Brown on some, more yellowish/tan on others.(same flush)

Yes there were like 5 spots of blue out of the whole flush on the big stems/caps, but very small. The tint looked Green on large meaty stems after handled. As seen in Photos.

Younger ones did not look that yellow, but they were under an umbrella from the more mature/bigger ones wich dropped there heavy spore deposit as seen in some pics.

Only the biggest of the biggest caps were un uniformly round.

No they don't look exactly like your pics, but those pics make me believe even more that they are Gym.spectabilis.

Every feature is the same except color variance. (not so yellow)
-Gill attachment
-gill color
-cap look,shape
-stem thickness, color
and especially the pins and/or aborts that turn blue.I Had some that were extremely blue.
The gyms i have found look some what large in comparison tho, well some.

But in an older flush wouldn't that change anyway??

Is there another gym that turns blue with rusty brown spore print and includes attached gills of rusty brown color( yellowish after or before spore drop) With veil attachment that looks exact same as spectabilis???

Every picture i have found drives me to the spectabilis.
(but i am no expert by an means)

P.S-any gym sites that someone could share so i could look for exact lookalikes??? and are their any poisonous gyms?

I wouldn't put too much faith in the bitterness. Of course if it's not bitter, you can definitely say it's not a gym. But there are some other mushrooms, Sulfur Tuft comes to mind, that are also hella-bitter like the gym.

I agree with coon that "gym is pretty much a different animal from region to region". If you are sure about the blue, the smell is fragrant fruity/spicy/old socks, and the taste is very bitter, then you have a winner.

Smell and taste are the best ways confirm ID on any mushroom. I found these impostors a few months ago and ruled them out with a smell and taste test.
