Outdoor grow question
    #6385725 - 12/19/06 09:12 AM (17 years, 3 months ago)

I am a complete NEWB,and still doing research, but haven't found a post related to this question.

I built a 4'X16' raised bed veggie garden a few years ago. I made my own soil mix (40% coir, 30% compost, and 30% verm) and veggies grew well. I am considering using it for a grow but have a question. Due to health reasons I did not garden this year. When I cleaned up all the dead weeds this fall I found that the neighborhood cats had turned it into a dung heap. Would any shrooms grown there be safe to eat? I know veggies would not, but am hopping that the myc will release something to kill any pathogens.

TIA for any help!

Any mushrooms that appear won't be toxic, but the cat poop will prevent the substrate from working well. Just use another spot or dig it out and replace with pure horse manure. You can lay chicken wire on top to keep the cats from digging, or set rat traps to drive them off.

Good luck with your attempts. All of my outdoor grows have been sabotaged by snails, slugs and squirrels.

Thanks for your replies, sorry I took so long to get back! :/ The holidays.

I set up the veggie garden per Jeff Ball's Yardening seris. This system has 2" id pipes attached to the sides of the bed every 4 feet. Flexible plastic pipe is used to make hoops that can support plastic for a mini greenhouse. I would also like to know if this would be practical for cultivation It would also help to keep out the vermin! LOL. Shade cloth can also be used when temps rise. Does this seem to be practicle for cultivation, or am I setting myself up for trouble. Thanks again for replying to a noob. : )
