Ecstasy bust down to luck

A BROKEN-DOWN van blocking traffic has led police to the state's biggest seizure of chemicals used to make ecstasy.
Police say they have smashed a drug ring that would have used the chemicals to produce 1.3 million ecstasy tablets valued at $51 million.

The hire van had ground to a halt in Geelong with engine trouble when unsuspecting local uniformed police moved in to help.

The officers helped push the white van from the road and out of the path of traffic building up behind it.

Det-Insp Steve Smith, of Victoria Police's drug taskforce said police took a closer look at the van's contents after speaking to the occupants, who had driven from New South Wales.

The officers then allegedly found 340 litres of the chemical methylene dioxyphenyl-2-propanone, known as liquid ecstasy.

It was in 68 containers packed in boxes.

It could easily have been turned into powder to make ecstasy pills, Det-Insp Smith said.

Two men were arrested at the scene, on Melbourne Rd.

Officers from the drug taskforce were called in and charged the men over Monday night's huge seizure.

"Those pills were destined to be on the streets of Melbourne within two weeks," Det-Insp Smith said.

He said luck played a big part in the breakthrough.

Victorian detectives and agents from the Australian Federal Police are now trying to work out how the chemicals got into Australia.

Two men -- Patrick Pak Lam Li, 50, of Sydney, and Keng Chuan Loh, of Singapore -- have been charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of a drug of dependence.

They were remanded in custody after appearing in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Mr Li and Mr Loh are to reappear on July 13.
