Harvesting and cleaning
    #6384709 - 12/18/06 09:33 PM (17 years, 3 months ago)

When you guys harvest out of your casing do big chunks of your casing get ripped off? do any of you guys or girls eat little pieces of your casing layer? it seems impossible to get away from all of the verm or peat, sometimes I eat just alittle verm and peat. is there a better way to go about harvesting and cleaning?

Cut the mushroom off at the base.  This does zero damage to the substrate.

it's really about how maticulous you want to be about it. You should get as much as you can off though. I don't know of any methods of getting them completely clean besides spending the time to pick it all off. It's not gonna kill you to eat a lil bit though

I never try and clean them when they are wet, wait till they are dry and than all you need to do is squeeze the ends where all the casing is stuck and it crumbles right off,if I feel like really getting anal about if I sometimes take a toothbrush to them after they are dry

Yes, and thats a great idea to brush the end stem of the shroom where the peat/verm still remains.

heh and I was using a laborious way that I wont even mention.

Well I just cut off the ends w/ scissors, that end part is not worth anything to me. I doubt Im missing out on any great amount of psilocybes in the base. And with a lifetime-capable supply, I don't cry over lost ends.

I use a clean knife to lightly scrape that stuff off. It can be slow going, but its good if you want to powder them up.
