Drying Shrooms in Dehydrator... SMELLS TERRIBLE!!

So I'm drying the first flush of my PE in my Nesco All-american food dehydrator...
About an hour after I turned it on, my room stinks so bad, I had to turn it off... Simply smells too bad...
Any ideas to mask/prevent smell?
Why do you think they smell so bad? Could it just be the combination of the heating element (95F) and the fan?

I have a nesco and, simply put, there is no smell at all. I would have to go right up to it and take a whiff to get any odor. Mine has heat on lowest setting too so I don't know what it could be that's the culprit.

Is this the first time, this unit has been used? If it is maybe there is a manufacturing smell that needs to burn off.

I have a nesco and it just smells like shrooms drying...perhaps shrooms drying smells bad to you and just haven't noticed it before.
The use of the nesco with its element and fan will defiantly increase the smell of the shrooms compared to just air drying with a fan and such.

Either your shrooms were contaminated (unlikely) or some hair/dust is burning on the heating element. Open it up and have a look or describe the smell. Does it smell like mushrooms?

Ditto, never heard of or experienced this. As mentioned, it has to be something melting on the element. But even for that, you would need it cranked up pretty high.

Its definitely mushroom smelling- and no they are not rotting. I like the smell of mushrooms, but this I cannot take. It smells like rotting mushrooms and throwup, but the mushrooms are not rotting, odd..
Whatever, thanks for the help guys, I guess ill just have to suck it up for a day or two.

Stick it out in the garage, back porch, or on a deck. This is a NEW one on me.

Hmm..
I may have fixed the problem..
I covered the dehydrator with an assload of old t-shirts- not only does this cover the smell up, but I can hear little to no noise from the machine
The only concern I have, is that this could start a fire.. I doubt it though, considering the temp is set at only 95F.
What do you guys think?

Dont cover the thing up - it will probably burn the motor out a lot quicker....
I'd almost suggest just fan drying your mushrooms for a day first - then finishing them off in the dehydrator to get em crispy.

that's very weird. same dehydrator. new as well. mine had no smell whatsoever. dried 100% fresh fruits. were cracker dry in about 36 hours on 95.
Dunno what to tell ya. Maybe wash it and try again?

As mentioned before, turn down the heat. My friend always diables the element in the dehyrator as it is NOT needed. YOu may have cooking them, not literally but they could've been too warm, and definitely do not cover it up with t-shirts. Air flow is needed for your little machine and the shrooms. My friend placed his in the vicinity of his computer tower and the humming sounds blend in.
Wouldn't a mushroomy smelling room be ideal though? Isn't that why we are all on here?

Your friend has something to learn. Without a slight bit of heat. You cannot dry anything drier than the ambient Rh of the air.

agar- I don;t want to get off in a rant...but the last two hydrators I used I disabled the element with no heat just passing air. It always worked. They took about 2 days depending on size and magnitude. I really never bothered to ask but what is usual curing times w/ a standard dehydrator? I heard on here back in the day that heat would inevitably deteriorate the condition or overall potency, not that it could be measured in the first place. Nonetheless, just looking to hear why heat is better. 102 degrees vs room temp. I always believed turning my back on a heated object was bad.
not bad as in is drunk driving but bad as in smoking cigarettes during a nap.

I don't even own a dehydrator but I get my mushrooms cracker dry using only a fan,I live in a not so humid environment so that may have something to do with it,Sometimes it takes like 4 days to be completely dry to the point of snapping in half when you bend them but either way they do get cracker dry without heat
