Sen. Johnson has stroke
    #6366488 - 12/13/06 03:23 PM (17 years, 3 months ago)

If Johnson were unable to serve, I hope that the Governor of South Dakota does not appoint a Republican senator and instead follows the will of the voters by appointing a democratic senator. Of course, he probably would be a petty asshole and appoint a Republican.

Quote:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Tim Johnson, D-South Dakota, was hospitalized Wednesday after he suffered stroke-like symptoms in his Washington office, his staff said.

Johnson, who turns 60 on December 28, was taken to George Washington University Hospital by ambulance about 11:30 a.m., sources in his office said.

A statement issued by Johnson's office said he was suffering from a "possible stroke."

"At this stage he is undergoing a comprehensive evaluation by the stroke team," the statement said. Staffers said that Johnson was conscious when he was transported to the hospital.

A lawyer and longtime state lawmaker, Johnson was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1986. He served five terms before he was elected to the Senate in 1996.

He is the senior senator from South Dakota and serves on numerous committees, including appropriations, budget, banking, energy and natural resources, and Indian affairs.

Should Johnson not be able to complete his term, which ends in 2008, South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds, a Republican, could appoint his replacement, which could shift the balance of power in the Senate.

Johnson battled prostate cancer in 2004, and after surgery, tests showed he no longer had the disease, according to his Web site.

Rounds will not get his opportunity to nominate anyone unless Johnson dies or something.

This is evidence of a severe character flaw. Not one expression of concern for the man, just the tool. Follow the will of the voters? Do you mean like Jeffords of Vermont did when he switched parties to throw the Senate to Dems

"Jeffords's independent status changed the Senate composition from 50-50 (with a Republican Vice President, Dick Cheney, serving as President of the Senate to break tie votes) to 49 Republicans, 50 Democrats, and one independent. Jeffords promised to vote for Democratic control after being promised a committee chairmanship by Democratic Leader Tom Daschle. He then handed his chairmanship of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, which he had held since 1997, to Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and was given the chairmanship of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, which would have been occupied by ranking minority member Harry Reid. Jeffords held this committee chair until the Democrats lost control of the Senate in 2003 following Congressional elections in 2002."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Jeffords

Or do you mean to say that the governor was not elected by the people of S. Dakota, which office has the responsibility to appoint a replacement Senator?

Or do you just mean that you don't give a fuck how it happens as long as Liberal jackasses run the country. Too bad Johnson betrayed you. So much for the compassion of liberals.

The 17th amendment of the U.S. Constitution says state legislatures can give their governors the power to appoint someone else to take over, but only in the case of "vacancies."

What's a vacancy? Clearly death or resignation, but history suggests not much else. Serious illness doesn't count.

The Senate Historian's office cites several examples of a senator being incapacitated for years and remaining in office.

Most recently, Sen. Karl Mundt (ironically, also from South Dakota) suffered a stroke in 1969 and was incapacitated, but he refused to step down. He remained in office until Jan. 1973 when his term expired. Mundt was pressured repeatedly to step down during his illness, but he demanded that the governor promise to appoint his wife. The governor refused, and Mundt remained in office.

Another example was Sen. Carter Glass, D-VA. Sen. Glass had a heart condition that prevented him from working for most of his last term after his re-election in 1942. Yet Glass refused to resign, and finally passed away from congestive heart failure in his apartment at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC in May of 1946.

As long as he doesn't resign or die, I think Rounds has no choice. I'd have to imagine that there would be tremendous pressure on him to not resign.

Rounds is a sucka anyways.

How have I projected the image that I have no compassionate concern for the man?

I thought this was a political discussion forum, not the get-well sympathy card forum. I wanted to discuss the political ramifications of this event. Of course, I wish his health and family well, but I didnt realize I need to post that before talking about the political chain-of-reaction that we could possibly witness. Relax.

The people of Vermont voted for Jeffords to represent them. He can switch to whatever party he choses to. And the governor, if it comes to it, can appoint whomever he wants. I just think it is far more crass and shrewd for a governor with an agenda to take advantage of a tragedy and appoint someone to shift the balance of power in washington than it is for a representative to switch parties because his opinion on certain subjects has evolved.

If it were vice-versa (a republican senator possibly being replaced by a democratic appointee) I would object as well.

Just read about this online. There's no way Rounds would appoint anyone but a Republican, and doing so...well we all know what would happen, so I won't beat a dead horse.

I hope he has a full and speedy recovery, both for the sake of him, his loved ones, and his country.

By that logic, the voters of South Dakota also voted for the man (Johnson), not the party (Democrats).

The time is right to start some conspiracy theories on how the Republicans caused him to have a stroke...

Not unlike Johnson in what way? Hairstyle? Race? Initials of first and/or last name?

If you believe your own comments excusing Jeffords' betrayal of the voters, then your argument is that political affiliation is irrelevant.
