Terrarium Temperature Control?

Okay...it just hit me...how does one control the temperature of the terrarium? Does perlite also cause heat to occur when it's saturated? Or do I need to buy a heating unit? None of the TEKs mention how to control the temperature of your terrarium...just the humidity.
Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

perlite doesn't aid in the heating just by a submersible aquarium heater, some people use heating pads (don't suggest it - hard to regulate temp), set it on top of appliances (fridge, stereo, etc), if your house is hot just use the room temp all kinds of possibilites - everyone will say something different

Is an aquarium heater safe to use if it's not submersed in water? Would you just attach it to the side of the terrarium?
Thanks for the tip.

there are various types of aquarium heaters, some are fully submersible, somer are not. To use a non submersible heater put it in a jar of water and clamp heater to side of jar, to use the submersible just drop in resevoir and thats it. Also when getting a heater they make a few that have an external control.... The one I originally bought didnt the control is this little knob on the heater, makes it kinda hard to adjust the heat without pulling my hole setup apart...
check this heater out its cheap and ya dont even need to leave home to buy it Ebay Titanium Cased Aquarium Heater w/ External Control
This one is 300 watts but the same seller has many more..... cheap too!
hope this helps Indicaz

Hi Indicaz,
>>there are various types of aquarium heaters, some are fully submersible, somer are not. To use a non submersible heater put it in a jar of water
Um..non-submersible would mean it can NOT be put in water...why would you recommend that I submerse it?? Wouldn't I just goope the non-submersible heater to the side of the terrarium? If I'm shooting for 84 degrees farenheit that's too low to worry about melting the tub...even after prolonged exposure...or am I wrong?

non submersible does not mean you cannot put it in water, it just mean thats the whole body of the heater can not be submersed.
a fully submersible heater can be fully submersed... a non submersible heater is clamped to the side of whatever its heating

Oh. hehehe Guess you can tell I never had fish in my life. LOLOL. Thanks for the clarification. My concern with putting it into a jar of water would be that the water would add too much to the humidity of the terrarium since I plan on using perlite. Is this a concern or will it actually help keep the perlite saturated?
Thanks again for all the advice.

You should be aiming lower than 84 degrees for your terrerium. That would be better for incubation; try somewhere around the mid seventies for fruiting.

Right on. I have the temp/humid for each strain printed out and I just got the two confused this morning. Still trying to get this all memorized before my syringes arrive.

it shouldnt be a problem adding a jar filled with water/aquarium heater to your chamber, but why not just use the fully submersible type of heater?

I don't know why you would want your terranium at 84 degrees, unless you are growing cambo's. Cambo's love heat, but they put off alot of heat too.

I want a heater to be able to adjust the temperature inside the terrarium to whatever the optimum temp for the particular strain is needed. I don't need 84 degrees specifically.
I'm not about to turn my apartment temperature up to freaking high heat just to grow shrooms. My comfort is more important to me and having Central Air it can get pretty cool in here during the summer. I want the terrarium to be more controlled a temperature than relying on room temperature.
I don't see why that's so mind boggling a concept.
Thanks for the tip about a submersable in a jar of water...I'll give it a shot!
