Will this work as a PC(I)? Spores dead(II)?
    #6334948 - 12/05/06 12:23 AM (17 years, 3 months ago)

Question I:

Will this suffice as a pressure cooker? I slapped two 7 1/2lb weight plates on top of the lid and cooked up some WBS. I'm curious if anyone has tried this before or not.

Question II

I worked hard to make a text book perfect spore syringe with a print. I innoced some jars one week today and no sign of life. Any ideas what could have happened? It's just some BRF cakes and with them I've always seen colonization at the very least 1 week.

Question 1: Terrible and potentionally unsafe idea. Get a PC or don't do grains.

Question 2: It can take upwards of a week just for some spores to germinate. Give it time.

Terrible and unsafe? How so? Did you try it and things went wrong? Please explain.

BTW The lid has a cup like plate on top that I can set the weights on top of without toppling over.

i dont think that setup will achieve the required 15 psi (min if you live at low elevations) to sterilize your grains. i would just buy a pc

it is unsafe bc you have 2 weights sitting on a lid to hold very very hot steam. you have no idea what the psi is on that thing and what if those wheights fell off r something then you may be right over it and get a face full off very hot steam... if your trying to save money then look for a pc at your thrift stores thats where i found mine for like 35 bucks and it can hold 24 brf cakes ..or you can also try ebay they are pretty cheap there too...but if i were you i sure wouldnt use that death trap thing again

This thread has been closed.

Reason:
Not only will it not build the required pressure, it is extremely unsafe. That isn't a pressure vessel, so the slightest pressure buildup could cause it to burst, sending hot steam and shrapnel in all directions.
